Why Iceland Is On My Travel Bucket List

I’ve mentioned on more than one occasion that Iceland has been on my list of places to visit for a long, long time. I am not sure what originally made me add the country to my list when I was younger but something about the place just seemed so magical, so cool. Now I am twenty five and have seen multiple friends and family members visit, it makes me even more determined to go myself. The jealousy is real, people!

There are so many things to do in Iceland that I would love to experience from visiting the geysers to taking in the stunning sights and architecture of the country or even visiting the Northern Lights, something I mentioned I would like to do in my 30 Before 30 list. There is just so much to do and so much that I would love to experience whilst in Iceland.

It has been said that Iceland have the happiest people and I must admit that this isn’t the first time I have heard that. Apparently the Icelandic nation are very warm, welcoming and friendly as a whole and that is something I love about a place – when you may be a stranger but people give you the opportunity to fit in.

Iceland as a whole is a breathtaking country and even if the people weren’t the happiest, I would still want to visit for the landscape alone. There are pictures across the internet showcasing just how beautiful the country is, how magical it seems. I can see why Iceland is becoming quite the place to visit nowadays – as I mentioned before, plenty of my friends and family have been and the pictures they have shared are absolutely magnificent. Why would you restrain yourself from visiting such a beautiful place?

I’m not going to lie though – two things that really interest me about the country now I am grown up are the geysers and the Northern Lights (or Aurora Borealis as it is also known. Two things that are natural but so stunningly breathtaking. I often find myself browsing pictures of them both – especially the Northern Lights – and I’ve even suggested honeymooning in Iceland when we eventually get married as I can’t think of anything more romantic than the Northern Lights themself, can you? Obviously us visiting the Northern Lights would be a once in a lifetime event – they are so amazing that I think I would only want to experience it the once on something as special as my honeymoon with the man I love – but the whole reason they exist is so interesting – a natural light display in the sky caused by particles from the Earth and sun colliding. They are named Aurora Borealis because they are named after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for the north wind, Boreas. The National Geographic in particular showcases some amazing photos of the lights.

There are so many other things I would like to experience in Iceland, it was tough to whittle it down to just a few but something I do know is that I am determined to visit before my 30th birthday – I turn 26 next month so that gives me just over four years. It is on my 30 before 30 list and I am determined to achieve it – wish me luck!
