My son loves reading, almost as much as I do. We’d heard quite a bit about WILF Books and when approached and asked if we would like to receive one of their boxes, Jack was extremely eager to.
WILF Books was created by Callum and Amelia for parents that are fully aware of the divisive events of the world, and might even be a little worried about how they can raise a child with kindness, love, empathy for others and the ability to accept differences when they live in such a turbulent environment. When choosing a subscription, you fill in a survey selecting the types of books you think would appeal to your child the most. You also mention any specific passions or interests they have, their age, their school reading age (if different), their full names and there is an option to put their gender if you so wish too. They also ask if you would like to send your own books back to share – we decided not to as Jack refuses to get rid of any of his books as he loves them all so much – but the survey states ‘we’ll send you a stamped envelope inside your boxes for you to choose those you’d like to share, and send them back to us. We’ll redistribute them as bonus books to those that will love them the most.” which I think is a fabulous idea.
First of all let me just mention the fantastic personalisation of the box Jack received. Not only did he receive his books wrapped perfectly with a card with his name on but the box also had a lovely New Year message which we really appreciated. But what books did we receive?
Jack received these three books – The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson, Giant Giraffes by Sally Grindley and The True Story of Nina and Pinkie: Elephant Rescue by Louisa Leaman. You can sense that there is an animal theme here but we were certainly impressed with the variety of books received. The Gruffalo is at the younger end of the scale but a book Jack has always loved and will continue to do so; whilst Giant Giraffes is a little bit older and just about right for Jack’s current reading age. He had great fun reading the story to me and is looking out for similar books to read too as he enjoyed this one so much. Finally the non fiction book. Jack doesn’t really read much non fiction however he has started to show an interest – especially when animals are involved – so we have been taking our time reading this together. We haven’t quite finished it yet but it is a fascinating story.
WILF Books claim to send out books tailored to your child and I really cannot fault them for how well they catered for Jack – he is a big animal lover and is quite advanced in his reading so I am very impressed with the range they sent out, as is he. The company currently cater for 2-9 year olds which is a great range.
There are three subscription options – a months for £19.95, three months for £55 and six months for £99.95. In each box you receive 3+ books , somestickers and/or activities to celebrate sharing, a WILF Books sharing chart, a personalised message from WILF (you can write back to him if you would like – he loves pen pals!) and an envelope for you to share back your own books (optional) to share with others. This is definitely worth the money in my opinion.
