A Home In Sunset Bay by Rebecca Pugh

I was eagerly anticipating the release of A Home In Sunset Bay for many weeks before its actual release date. When it was finally released last week, I quickly got to reading it – I loved Rebecca’s debut offering Return To Bluebell Hill ((review here) so was excited to see what she came up with for her new novel.

So where do I start? Yet again Rebecca has created a multitude of characters you can just fall in love with and those who you can equally detest. Whilst Laurie was by no means my favourite character – I found her ‘woe is me’ attitude a little too much at times – I really loved her little sister, Mia and especially Cal. So much so that I told the author so on Twitter!

I do think that the fraught relationship between the sisters was mostly their mother Marnie’s fault but both the girls needed to take some blame for the lack of communication between them, perhaps Laurie a little more than Mia. Mia felt hurt and rightly so – and whilst Laurie wasn’t necessarily happy in her life, she never once thought to check in on her sister to find out how she was doing. She kept bemoaning that she was always doing what other people wanted to make them happy – but she never once seemed to give a second thought to her sister. I don’t know if other readers felt the same but Laurie really infuriated me in some places – yes, she did try and make things up to her sister but she shouldn’t have needed to in the first place.

I absolutely detested Laurie’s ex Neil and you will see why if you read the book for yourself. He is a smarmy, horrible excuse for a man unlike Cal and Marco. Cal seems just a little too perfect at times except for the fact he’s got a girlfriend when he is ever so clearly in love with someone else who secretly reciprocates. I found myself annoyed with Cal in the scenes with his girlfriend, it is obvious that him and someone else are meant to be – why don’t they just go for it?

All in all, I found this a really quick, easy, fun read. I read it within a day as I just wanted to know what happened. Would Mia ever get a break? Would Laurie ever find true happiness? Would Marnie back off and would Cal call time on his relationship and go after the woman he loves? I guess you will have to read it to find out…
