Unfortunately, due to living in rented accommodation, we must seek permission before getting a pet and we are pretty sure that the answer will be no, as it was in our old accommodation before Jack was born. I clearly remember visiting our local animal shelter a few years ago, looking for the perfect dog for our home, when our landlord gave us the crushing news that we weren’t allowed a pet. I found out I was pregnant with Jack a few weeks later…fate, perhaps?
I’ve only had a couple of pets in my time: 2 hamsters and some goldfish and these were all way back when I was a little girl. Steve himself has always grown up with dogs and we know that we want to include a dog in our family as soon as we possibly can.
For now though, Marley, Steve’s parents dog, is as close as it gets. We tend to look after him when they go on holiday and Jack adores him as you can just tell from the picture above.

If you are thinking about getting a dog at any point, I would definitely get an elderly one. Whilst this may seem like no fun, you will never know what is around the corner and whilst it may sound horrible to say this, if your dog ever starts suffering due to old age or you have to get rid of it for any reason, at least you won't be looking at having one for twenty years or more.
We had an elderly border collie for several years, and because he was a rescue (and a border collie – they are extremely intelligent) you will probably find that your dog will be much gentler around Jack and more careful if you have one of those.
Plus border collies love to round things up, and frequently our dog tried to do so when he was still insecure about where we all were, or when he fancied company with his family. He was always incredibly gentle with everybody, and would just lay there quite happily having hats put on him, having his ears played with, and I used to take naps with him on the sofa and he never seemed to mind.
Our border collie learned very quickly how to fetch the post (as when he was still nervous we used to reward him for doing little jobs, and trying to make him feel more comfortable in our home.) He very quickly took to this, and soon after he became incredibly verbal and used to sing for us and greet us at the door when we came home and got excited.
Sometimes he sounded like he was trying to say a word (some dogs do.) If we said 'bowl' or 'door' to him (easy words) sometimes he would sing right after, and sound like he was trying to mimick.
He was very much a family spirited dog, and he used to get worried whenever one of us was ill or upset. He would come and lay by our side, or by the bed/sofa wherever we were, until we got up and started behaving normally again.
He would play with our rabbits when they were allowed to run in the hall, and wash the baby guinea pigs when they were loose in my room. He was also very protective of the animals down the garden, if a rabbit was in a run and a fox appeared, he would have had it. Same for next doors cat, whom he seemed to get on very well with ordinarily just not when it got on top of the run.
The best way to get on with a dog I find, is to get a very intelligent dog because then you're more or less living with another human being. If you get a pretty dog that has been bred for something in particular, then you are going to have to thoroughly train that animal, and even then you might still have problems.
Whilst I am no expert on dogs, if I ever had the chance to have another dog it might be a border collie – but I wouldn't want to replace our Luke. Border collies are generally very parental dogs, and I have heard a lot of good things about them from other owners.

I had a collie cross, and she was the most gentle, loving dog ever. She did the rounding up thing too – drive her mad when we were all in different rooms! Xo
