Being Organised As A Family

Collaborative Post

It can be incredibly difficult to keep a household running and everything organised. Trying to bring up a young family and keep to all your commitments can often be tough but we all muddle along in our own way. I wanted to talk to you today about how you can be organised as a family.

Delegate

It makes sense that it needs more than one person to keep the cogs of the household turning. Everyone should have a role in the home – whether it is something small such as being responsible for bringing down their own laundry or a larger job such as managing the calendar for everyone in the household. Delegate jobs to all members of the household so you can keep things running smoothly.

Write everything down

Booked an appointment? Write it down. Need something specific from the grocery store? Write it down. Had a brilliant idea? Write it down. By writing everything down, you’ll never forget anything again.

Utilise apps to help you remember things

In this world of technology, apps are so useful! You can get apps for pretty much anything nowadays and one such app that I have been utilising lately is the Safe + Sound pill reminder app. Free to download on both Google Play and the App Store, this pill reminder app helps people to take control of their daily medications.

I don’t take daily medication all year round but I do take hayfever medication during the warmer months and would forget to take it if I didn’t have someone or something reminding me – this is also why I started getting the injection rather than the contraceptive pill as my ability to remember to take pills is absolutely shocking. I’m also planning on starting to take a variety of vitamins now that I have completely stopped breastfeeding and consulted my GP so need something to remind me to do so.

It gives you a handy timeline view of upcoming medications for the day – for people like my in-laws who have to take multiple medications a day, this could prove very helpful. The app also automatically ticks off the dosages you have already taken so you never make the mistake of missing a dosage or taking it twice. You can even get personalised reminders to your smartphone, letting you know which medication you need to take, what the dosage is and how you should take it. There are so many other great features too – you can read about them here.

Why wouldn’t you utilise apps such as these when you have them at your disposal?

Meal plan

I definitely need to get better at this and aim to be once we’re fully settled in the new house. My friend meal plans for a whole week and then spends one day a week batch cooking – she hates cooking and doing it once a week leaves the rest of the week free to just heat something up and not spend hours in the kitchen. With kids, meal planning definitely seems like a good idea.

Have a command centre

I didn’t have one in our old house as it was so small but I am creating one for the new house. A command centre is a central place where you keep the items your family needs for their daily routine. House keys, car keys, school bags, lunchboxes – anything that is needed on a daily basis can be placed here so everyone knows they can just grab and go.

Prepare the night before

Do you ever find yourself in such a rush in the mornings? Then preparing the night before is something you should definitely be doing. Do the kids need packed lunches? Then make their sandwiches and pack the boxes the night before. Lay out school and work uniforms the night before too.

These are my top tips for being organised as a family – do you have any that you’d like to share?

  1. Preparation the night before is essential for me. It saves so much time on the morning. I always have clothes laid out and prepare lunches.

I keep everything written down and have quite an extensive to do list as I would rather be prepared. When we move I plan to delegate some tasks to my other half, although he doesn’t know that yet! x

  3. My husband always tells me off for not writing things down but I am getting better at doing it now

  5. I used to have a command centre but I was the only one in our house using it. Still sort of have my own command centre now

  6. Great tips! There are so many great apps out there nowadays they really do help keep us all organised don’t they! I also swear by planning ahead the night before! Our day seems to run so much smoother if I have everything like uniform ready, bags packed, letters filled in etc the night before so we are all ready to go.

  8. Sandra Fortune says:

I have to write everything down being absent minded as for hay fever I don’t get much but more nasal catarrh as the weather changes
