As a small business owner, every decision and investment must be weighed carefully, especially when it comes to marketing and content creation. Everything is so expensive, as you already know, and while the idea of hiring a photographer, videographer, or whatever other creative professional out there would be a dream—sometimes, it’s literally not possible!

Their services are expensive, and again, it’s totally justified why they’re expensive (their business owners also deserve a living wage). But as a business owner, if you can’t afford something, well, you just can’t afford anything. With that said, just because you can’t afford a service doesn’t mean that you should restrict yourself from creating amazing content.

One of the roles of being a business owner is wearing many hats, and if you want to get the perfect images and videos for your content, sometimes you just have to buy the equipment and do it yourself. So, with that all said, here’s why it just might be a good idea to create your own content yourself!

Cost Efficiency

One of the most apparent benefits of creating your own content is cost savings. Again, just like what was mentioned right above, professional services, especially in creative fields, can be expensive. So, just by handling content creation internally, you save on these costs, which can be particularly advantageous for businesses with tight budgets.

The money saved can be redirected into other growth-driving activities, such as product development or marketing campaigns. Creative professionals understand that sometimes, a business just can’t afford their services. Sure, you might not have as high-grade products as they do, such as the DJI Avata drone, but that’s fine.

Just think of it like this: just buy (or rent) what you can right now. It doesn’t need to be top-grade or as professional as what these professionals use (since they use top-of-the-line products), but instead, go for the next best thing that’s within your budget.

Authenticity and Personal Connection

There’s something uniquely authentic about content created by the very people who run the business. Customers today crave authenticity; they want to know the people behind the products or services they use. DIY content often carries a personal touch that professional content might lack.

Again, not to knock anything professional, because that’s needed too (and can be wonderful if you want to focus on extremely high-end content), but going for a slightly rustic approach can be great too. So, just think of it this way; this authenticity can strengthen your brand’s voice and forge a deeper connection with your audience.

Flexibility and Speed

If you’re hiring other businesses, you need to keep in mind that you’re having to go by their schedule. Is that something that you’d even want? Maybe you need it ASAP? Maybe there’s no time to wait (such as trying to follow a trend). Creating content in-house provides unmatched flexibility—do it how you want and when you want.

Do you need to make a quick update to a promotional video or tweak a graphic for a social media post? When you’re the creator, you can make immediate changes without waiting on external schedules. This speed and agility can be crucial in responding to market changes or capitalizing on timely opportunities.

You Have the Best Understanding

You understand your business better than anyone else, better than any service could. So, when you dive into content creation, you develop a new skill set that can be valuable across different areas of your business. Learning to take great photos, design graphics, or produce simple videos not only reduces dependency on external professionals but also gives you a better understanding of what makes compelling content.

This holistic insight can improve your marketing strategies and customer engagement tactics. So, to sum up, you’re the one who has the best understanding of your business. When you have the best understanding of creating content, then you know how you’ll want the content and what your audience will want.

Total Creative Control

For the most part, you get creative control when hiring someone, but sometimes, they really might expect to take control (as in, it’s a part of their business model). Creating your own content puts you in the driver’s seat. You have total control over the look, feel, and message of your content. This complete creative control ensures that everything you produce is perfectly aligned with your brand’s identity and values, something that can sometimes get lost in translation when working with external contractors.

You’re Building In-House Capabilities

As you develop your content creation skills, you’re also building an in-house capability that adds long-term value to your business. While sure, having to wear multiple hats can get pretty tiring, it can be worth it because of the skills. Just think about that for a moment, the skills you’ll obtain. Over time, this can evolve into a significant competitive advantage. You may find that your team can produce content that’s just as good as, if not better than, what outsourced professionals might deliver.

Full Control Over Intellectual Property

So this is where things can get really confusing for new business owners. Some creatives, not all, but some, have it in their contract that they own the intellectual property of any and every content they make, even if it’s something that’s meant for you. There can be a whole whirlwind of problems if you don’t understand any of this. So, with that said, sometimes it can be safer to focus on creating your own content because then you own your content, and you get to protect it.

With that said, this means that creating your own content means you retain full control over your intellectual property. When outsourcing, you may have to navigate licensing, usage rights, and other legal complexities (and again, a lot of creatives will state they own the rights). It can be massively helpful in keeping content creation in-house simplifies these issues and ensures you own and control all your creative assets.

More Predictable Budgeting

Here’s a hypothetical situation; you have a tight-knit relationship with a freelance photographer. But then, that photographer eventually raises their prices. They raise them to the point that you struggle to afford them, and then they raise them again to where you full-on just can’t afford them. Then you’re in a scramble to find a new photographer- it’s not ideal, now is it?

As a business owner, you need to have predictability. But are you truly getting that if you’re having to hire freelancers? While sure, the initial content creation efforts may require an upfront investment in tools and training, over time, in-house content creation can be more cost-effective. You can better control expenses without the variability of hiring freelancers or agencies, leading to more predictable budgeting.

Better for Customer Insights

This, in a way, goes back to creativity and having control. So, it’s not only about what you want, but it’s also what the customer wants to see. Creating your own content often involves direct interaction with customers, whether through responses to social media posts, comments on blogs, or feedback on videos. These interactions provide valuable insights into your customers’ preferences and behaviors, which can inform not only future content but also product development and customer service strategies.

It’s Easier to Achieve Your Vision

Creative professionals can’t get inside your head, only you can get inside your own head. So, you have to understand that no one understands your business’s vision and goals better than you and your team.

So think of it like this; by creating content yourself, you ensure that every piece of content is aligned with your brand’s core values and strategic objectives, without the risk of misinterpretation by external parties. You’re getting exactly what you want and exactly how you’d want it. This coherence strengthens your brand’s voice and message across all platforms.
