When To Talk To Your Kids About Money

Collaborative Post

When your child is born, you probably don’t give it much thought to money. However, as time goes on, the number of bills that need to be paid increases and raising a child gets more expensive. You might even realize that you spent many years working hard for things that are now practically worthless (perhaps like old school Star Wars toys).

With this in mind, talking about money with your kids can help them plan ahead for their future by teaching them how to save and spend properly.

Here are five things you should teach your children about money at different stages of their life:

1) High School/Books/Gifts – Teach Them To Save Money For Big Purchases

Although saving up for something may seem like a difficult task, it’s important for kids to learn how to do this at a young age. Start by explaining to them that if they save their money for a longer period of time, they will be able to afford bigger and better things.

2) College – Teach Them The Value Of A Pound

One of the most important things you can teach your children about money is the value of a Pound. College is an expensive time, and if your kids are not careful, they could easily graduate with a lot of debt.

Explain to them that when they’re in college, every penny counts. This means that they need to be frugal when it comes to spending their money on things like food, books, and rent.

3) After College – Teach Them How To Handle Credit Wisely

Once your children have graduated from college and entered the working world, it’s important to start teaching them about credit cards. Explain to them that credit cards should only be used in emergency situations and that they should always try to pay off their balance each month.

Additionally, you can teach them about avoiding debt by using credit cards and the dangers of interest rates. By teaching your children about credit cards now, they’ll hopefully avoid taking on too much debt as they get older.

Now is also the perfect time to introduce them to a female financial advisor in order to start with long-term wealth planning.

4) When They Get Their First Job – Teach Them To Live Within Their Means And Have A Plan For The Future

Once your child starts getting their first job after college, it becomes more important than ever to teach them how to live within their means and plan for the future. Explain to them that if they spend all of their money on things like clothes and food, they won’t have anything saved up for emergencies or retirement later in life.

5) When They’re Married And Have Kids – Teach Them How To Budget Properly And Save For The Future

Once your children are married and have kids of their own, it’s important to start teaching them how to budget properly and save for the future. Explain to them that they should never spend more than they earn each month and that they should begin saving for retirement as soon as possible.

By teaching your children about money in this way, you’ll help them ensure a stable financial future for themselves and their families!
