Have you always wanted to be your own boss? Do you have a great idea for a business, company, or product? Are you ready for a challenge? If you answered ‘YES’, to these questions, it might be time for you to start your own business.
Running your own company comes with a range of benefits. This includes:
- Working on a project, you are truly passionate about
- A flexible work schedule, tailored around your lifestyle
- The chance to increase your earning potential
- Increased independence – you are in charge
However, to succeed, you need more than just a good idea. To begin with, you’ll need to make a host of personal sacrifices, especially if you have to leave your current job to get the business up and running. With that in mind, here are some top tips for starting your own business in 2021.
- Put together a business plan.
- Connect with other members of your new industry, forge relationships, and ask for advice and guidance when necessary.
- Register as self-employed, providing the government with information about your company.
- Get to grips with Corporation Tax rates. You can use online calculators, such as those provided by Crunch, to determine exactly how much tax you will owe. They can also help you better understand how corporate taxes work and what benefits you may be entitled to.
- Set yourself a budget. Figure out how much you need to spend on manufacturing your products, and how much you want to sell them for.

- Decide on your target audience. Who will purchase your product, and why?
- Think about how you are going to market your product/service. What is your USP?
- Hold a series of focus groups, gaining feedback from your target audience. This is a great way to determine what is and isn’t working.
- Set up a website for your company. Though there are plenty of free templates available online, you may wish to consult a graphic designer who can help your website stand out. Ensure your website tells the story of your brand and includes an online store page.
- In addition to your website, think about the other sites you can use to promote and sell your products/services. For example, you may wish to set up an Etsy page.
- Focus on developing a social media presence – starting with a Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram account. The more followers you have, the more money you can earn.
- Invest in cybersecurity, to ensure that you keep your small business safe online. This not only protects your business but your customers who are making purchases too.
- Set up the perfect workspace. If you are currently unable to purchase office space and plan on working from home – set up an at-home office. When possible, avoid working in your bedroom.
- Are you selling wholesale? Think about what you need to consider – you might be considering stocking vape wholesale or another type of product. Where are you storing it? How will you market it?
As your company begins to grow, start expanding your team. Focus on hiring the best employees for your business. Look for hardworking, passionate and likeminded people who you will enjoy spending time with.
Set yourself goals. When running a business, you must remain focused. You can do this by setting yourself a series of goals that you must achieve each week, month or year.
