If your business is ready to hire employees, you don’t want to waste time recruiting people who are anything less than perfect for the job.
One of the most important factors in the success of any business is the quality of its employees. Staff who are hard-working, highly-skilled, happy in their work and loyal will bring far more to the table than mediocre and uninterested employees. A well-crafted recruitment process, including clear job descriptions and CV writing tailored to highlight the qualities you seek, can make all the difference. So how exactly do you find the best employees for your business?
Cast your net wide
Before you do anything else, it’s important that you cast your net as widely as possible. Why? It’s simple really — the further afield you look, and the more places you choose to recruit, the more likely you are to hit upon the perfect candidate, which is why so many companies recruit internationally now.
If you do decide to recruit internationally, sand you probably should, you will need to read up on your immigration law, and you may need to hire a translator or take into account local rules and regulations before hiring, but don’t let that put you off because the right person could make a lot of money for your company.
Exams and assignments
One really good way of narrowing down candidates to find the employees who fit your business the best is to set exams and assignments that test their skill base. Whether you’re looking to test their problem-solving abilities or work out which applicant has the best social skills, there are tests you can use to help you. Do this and you’ll get a much idea of what they can do that you would by simply looking at their CV, which may or may not be accurate.
Choose someone with commitment
The last thing you want is to hire someone who looks on the ole as nothing more than a job — you want to hire someone who has a passion for your sector; someone who will work hard because they care, and who will stick around because they love what they do. A good way to find someone like that is to choose an applicant who doesn’t have a history of moving from job to job; someone who doesn’t jump sectors all the time, and who has a significant work history in your field. It’s not an exact science, but if you choose someone who meets those criteria, you’re more likely to hit upon a great employee for your business.
Let them meet the team
Before you hire anyone, it’s a really good idea to take them out for lunch with the team. Why? Because the ideal employee doesn’t just have the best work-based skills, they also have excellent social skills and they are able to fit in with your existing team. Taking them out with the team will let you see how they interact, which will help you to determine how likely they are to gel with the people already in your business. This could save you from hiring a nightmare employee who causes no end of issues in the office.
Take your time and take these tips into account and you should have no problem finding the best employee for your business.
