The Work/Life Balance For Solopreneurs

Collaborative Post

There are all sorts of things that bring people to the world of running their own business. More often than not, it is a single exciting, inciting idea that they have had, and which they can’t wait to share with the world. That is the best reason to start up your own business, but many might admit to merely wanting to make a little more money on the side, and that’s okay too. Whatever your underlying reason, it’s important to understand that the work/life balance is as relevant as ever in this situation. If you are keen to know how to balance your own free time with your work in your business, read on.

Outsourcing To Free Up Time

As you are working solo, you obviously can’t delegate any of your work to anyone, which is normally one of the first steps that people take when they are trying to create some more time for themselves and thus improve their work/life balance. However, there is a way of effectively doing this anyway, and it is outsourcing. That is when you pass on the work that needs to be done to an external individual or team, so that you don’t have to do it yourself. It goes without saying that you need to pay them, but often the fee they charge will be well worth the extra time you suddenly have. This might be especially worthwhile if you can feel yourself becoming particularly stressed.

Keeping Money Separate – And Safe

A big part of ensuring a healthy work/life balance is looking after your money – both your business’ money and your own, personal cash. And to ensure that you do that effectively, you need to keep both of those separate at all times. There are many profoundly encouraging reasons to do so, most notably the fact that you can avoid getting your own personal money into any kind of legal proceedings as long as you keep it separate from the business. But it’s also, more generally, just a way of taking care of yourself financially. The more successfully you keep them separate, the easier you will find it to look after your money in the normal ways. And when it comes to your business finances, be sure to budget everything out as finely as you possibly can.

Committing Yourself To Breaks

A big problem that many solo entrepreneurs face is that they fail to give themselves a decent amount of breaks. It’s all too easy to fall into this trap: you might feel that you can work nine hour days, and then before you know it you think you’ll try ten hours. Before long, you are working twelve hours every day, and kidding yourself that it’s fine. But it’s not – nobody can sustain such a stringent working schedule for too long, and something is going to have to give at some point. Committing yourself to breaks is a good way to make sure that you don’t abuse yourself in this way, and you will probably discover the importance of it, at the latest, once you have burned yourself out the first time. Draw up your break schedule – and stick to it religiously.

Communicating Between The Two

The whole point is to be found in that one word: balance. In order to get your work/life balance right, you have to actually find some way to communicate between the two. That could mean that you need to compromise from time to time, taking an extra hour off work here or adding one on there. The important thing is that you don’t do too much or too little of each, and to do that you have to have that communicative link. That is why calendars, diaries and so on are such useful tools to have.

Pay Attention To Your Body

Finally, a quick note to say that you should always pay close attention to your body. As long as you do that, you will find that you know when you need to take time off work, or when you are able to work more and harder. In particular, get to know the early signs of stress, so that you can do something about that early on, and not abuse yourself in the name of your business. That is a real way to show yourself respect, as well as the business itself.
