The process of moving house can be a stressful one. My home is currently full of packed boxes, eight years of living here neatly packed away, ready for the day we get the keys to the new house and can get it all moved in. There are so many memories to say goodbye to and I know Jack is struggling a little bit with it all as he moved in here when he was just one month old – he hasn’t ever known another house. Here are some top tips to move house without the stress.
As with any move, there are many things to think about. We are moving to a larger property with more bedrooms. We have a decent amount of furniture to move across but we are also in need of a few items that we have never had the space for in this property. As you can imagine, I’ve been searching home websites to find the stuff we actually need.
Jack and Olivia will finally both have their own rooms – Olivia is currently still in our room and we were considering moving her into Jack’s before we moved. This means brand new furniture for her and she is very excited – she’s got her heart set on a certain type of bed and certain bedroom furniture too!

The most important thing though for us is a dining table and I happened to find the perfect dining table on LionsHome. This house is just far too small for a dining table – we do have a tiny little one but it isn’t large enough for our family. The new house has a spacious dining room so that means we need a dining table to match so we can all enjoy our dinner at the table together and chat about our day – it is something I have really missed whilst we have lived here.
The tough thing now is knowing when to buy these items. We get the keys to the new property in the next few days but still have a couple of weeks before we give the keys back into this place – this means we will be moving the smaller stuff across slowly and then having a decent amount of time to give this property a deep clean. The problem is we will be between two properties so don’t know the right time to go and get these items or order for them to be delivered as we won’t know where we’ll be!
There’s so much more to think about too – redirection of mail, changing your address for the important people (HMRC, DVLA, your bank), cancelling certain products or policies, starting new ones – making sure you’ve got all your ducks lined up in a row. The process of moving house is a very busy and tense one – although it will all be worth it in the end!
It will all be over in a couple of weeks and this whole process will be a distant memory but right now, I just can’t wait for it all to be over. I am so tired of packing boxes and not being able to move around the house freely because of them!
How do you find the process of moving house?

I think moving is one of the most stressful things anyone can ever do. The last time I moved I was advised to get in a company who pack up your house into boxes, label them and meet you at your new home and honestly, it was a much better experience. I can’t wait to see you all moved into the new house x
Moving house is exciting, isn’t it? I can see how it will benefit you to have more room and a bedroom for each child. Good luck with it all, and I hope it is not too stressful x
I’m finding it exciting but after next week when we have the keys to our new house I’m sure I’ll find it stressful. As we’re going to be renovating the house first I want to buy things when I see them on sale/ discount but we don’t have anywhere to store them. Exciting times for you moving soon though, hope it all goes well x
I can see the positives and negatives of preparing for a house move. The opportunity to clear clutter whilst you pack up, however, the time taken to complete the task can be overwhelming.
I moved a few times when I was younger and since being an adult have moved twice. It is good that you declutter and get rid of a lot of rubbish, but it is all the added stess that goes with it that I do not like
I hate moving house, years of living in rented accommodation made me have to be on the move every couple of years. Good luck with your move, sounds like you are organised
It is so exciting moving house but there is so much to think about! I don’t know how people move every couple of years, I can’t be bothered with all that faffing lol Very exciting that you get a proper family dining table! Good luck
It’s such an exciting but stressful time! We moved last summer – we bought our first house but it was such hard work I would be happy to never move again!
You think moving house is stressful? We moved COUNTRIES. That was a lot of work. But worth it. Just like moving house. Fresh start!
After having moved 4 times in 6 years, my 1st hint is to declutter, get rid of any stuff you have not used in the past year, as there has been stuff I have lugged from move to move, sell, it , donate it, chuck it, just get rid of it!
I bet Olivia is really excited to have her own bedroom. Good luck with your house move and I hope everything goes well.
For me, moving houses can be both exciting and stressful at the same time. My kids would be excited to have their own bedrooms and things would be hectic during the move.
Oh good luck! I have moved 8 times in the last 15 years an I am hoping we don’t have to for a while. I always try to unpack the kids rooms first as that means they are then occupied in their new rooms whilst you can get on with the rest of the house! Good luck!!
This would be a total nightmare for me as I have so much clutter that I am attached to and that’s not counting the books
I haven’t moved in 27 years and I’m very aware of the amount of ‘stuff’ we’ve gained, I dread the idea of moving now!
I’ve not moved house for over 30 years It takes some doing both exciting and stressful but worth it in the end
