Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central at The Electric Ballroom, Camden

I’ve mentioned before that I like to enter competitions and I was very lucky to spot a very low entry competition the other week by NOW TV on Twitter. Russell Howard was filming his new show all week at The Electric Ballroom, Camden and they were offering some tickets to go and see it being recorded on the Friday. I entered, thought nothing of it and then I won.

We haven’t had much luck with comedians. I managed to secure tickets to a panel show with various comedians a few years back but due to circumstances, we were unable to make it. A little disappointed, we bought some Jason Manford tickets. Then I found out I was pregnant. My due date? Yep, you guessed it – the day of the show. They then moved my due date forward so if we had gone, I’d have supposedly been overdue. As it turns out, I would have been heavily pregnant and overdue but Jack didn’t turn up until 4 days after the show – too late by then, we’d already passed the tickets on and I didn’t relish the prospect of walking around London so heavily pregnant just in case.

Steve and I don’t really get many nights out together without Jack so we took the opportunity gladly. Jack went to Steve’s parents for the evening and we set off into Camden – with me reliving my teenage years by going past a few of my old haunts. We stopped for a bite to eat then got in the queue to go in. Luckily because we had won tickets and were obviously priority, we were guaranteed to get in. Like with many TV recordings though, the tickets to them ARE free and for those with normal tickets, it really is first come, first served so it is best to get there as early as possible.

We didn’t get many pictures as you aren’t allowed to have your phones on when the show is recording – so we took this quickly when we first went into the venue so you can see what we saw.

We saw a couple of shows being recorded and got to see a whole plethora of comedians, two which were quite big names and some who we found funnier than others. I found two of the lesser known comedians the funniest however – I think it was probably because I had never seen them perform before whereas I have seen the more well known comedians perform routines in the past.

Russell also treated us to some stand up – and of course, he was the stand out comedian for me. I’ve made no secret of my love for the man and he certainly didn’t disappoint, having the audience roaring with laughter. That being said,I didn’t catch the name of the warm up guy who came on to tell us the safety mumbo jumbo and get us excited for the shows but he was HILARIOUS.

By the end of the night, my ribs ached from laughing so much and my hands ached from all the applause. It was interesting to see the workings of a TV show being filmed but if I’m being perfectly honest, sometimes I totally forgot that it was being filmed, completely lost in the moment. Here’s hoping no unflattering camera shots of me appear on the show, eh?

My friend has been to plenty of shows being recorded and has always raved about them. I can see why – this was a great night out, done relatively on the cheap (we paid for our travel into London and some food) and we had a good old laugh. What could be better? We’ll definitely be looking to do something like this again.

  1. I have seen Russell Howard in the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff and he was brilliant, but with a big venue you do lose the atmosphere. I love seeing stand up comedians in big and small venues. I also took my son the the Edinburgh festival a couple of years ago and we loved it. What a fab night Bex! I wish we had show tapings near us in South Wales, I would go all the time.

  2. Ooh how fab! Russell Howard is awesome and always well worth seeing. Who were the other comedians you saw? I'm always on the lookout for good ones to go and see in Edinburgh each year 🙂 xx

  3. I'm glad you had a great time and I find Russell Howard really funny so woould have also loved this x
