Can you believe Paddington Bear is 60 years old? A fictional character, beloved by children and adults alike, Paddington Bear has been a part of all our lives for such a long time now. He first appeared on the 13th of October 1958 in the book A Bear Called Paddington and he’s been with us ever since. The book was written by Michael Bond and illustrated by Peggy Fortnum and there have been more than twenty books since.
His look is absolutely iconic. If someone asks you to describe Paddington Bear, they will certainly describe the friendly bear from Peru as having his old hat, duffel coat and battered suitcase. They will probably also mention that he adores marmalade!
To celebrate such a big anniversary, Rainbow Designs have released an absolutely beautiful 60th anniversary Paddington Bear plush, inspired by the beautiful Peggy Fortnum illustrations, along with a selection of other fantastic anniversary memorabilia. This plush features the distinctive anniversary artwork, along with a beautiful checked scarf and is perfect from young children to those who collect Paddington Bear memorabilia (the 60th anniversary badge is a lovely touch and will certainly make this a collectible)- it certainly isn’t to be missed.
Jack and Olivia were very lucky to be sent a 60th anniversary plush of their own – well, I should say Olivia as she quickly claimed it for her own and has been trying to take it everywhere with her! He is super cute and he really does look true to the original bear that Peggy Fortnum designed all those years ago. The label ‘Please Look After This Bear. Thank you.‘ epitomises Paddington Bear for me – I remember seeing it in the illustrations in my very old book almost thirty years ago – I think it may even have been my mum’s book before me!
Paddington Bear has hopefully been enjoying his new home with us and enjoying celebrating his 60th anniversary with those who love and appreciate him. The plush is super soft as you would expect it to be and very cuddly – as I type, he’s in Olivia’s bed, she loves him so much – we all know how much little ones love plush toys!
In the run up to Christmas, this would make a lovely gift for anyone, young or old, who happens to love Paddington Bear. Even my mum was quite taken with him and she’s almost as old as he is! This retails for around £24.99 and is available from a range of retailers including John Lewis.

Paddington Bear is such a classic character, and so iconic. I love that he is still as famous after all this time. Such a good giveaway, I’m sure he will be well loved by anyone that wins him.
How wonderful that we still love Paddington Bear after all this time. A great event to celebrate. I think my favourite thing about him is his love for maramlade, just brilliant.
