Getting qualified: is it necessary?
For some employers, it’s essential that you have specific knowledge that enables you to successfully complete the work they need you to do. As a result, it might be that you’ll need to obtain particular qualifications before an employer considers giving you the job. For example, you may need to have a university degree in a certain subject, or you may be required to hold a certificate in a specific field.
For instance, if you want to become a mortgage adviser, you’ll need to gain a certification that is recognised by the Financial Conduct Authority – the regulator of the financial industry in the UK – such as the Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (CeMAP) qualification. This course provides you with an understanding of the mortgage market, as well as an awareness of how to apply this knowledge when providing advice to clients. Without this type of certification, you will not be legally allowed to practice in giving mortgage advice, so it’s crucial that you obtain your CeMAP qualification, or another recognised certification, first.

Experience: do I really need it?

By having some experience, you might also be able to go into a job at a higher level.
