I mentioned a little while back that we had started potty training properly with Jack. I wanted to keep you updated with our progress and let you know how we are getting on. We have been participating in the Potty Training Live 2014 campaign and were sent some potty training pads to try out.
We picked the night time pads for a number of reasons. Jack is quite good at telling us when he needs to use the potty during the day yet often wakes in the early hours with a rather full nappy because he has been asleep and can’t tell us he needs it. I have tried taking him to the potty at certain times during the night but he just doesn’t want to know. Whilst he rarely has accidents, I thought these would be helpful nonetheless.
I also let him try them out during the day every now and again despite them being night time pads. He wasn’t too sure on pants on their own so I had a brainwave of putting one of these in his pants instead and he went on his merry way, not phased at all. I found that he did sometimes tell us still when he needed the toilet but occasionally relied on these a bit too much and had an accident or two! These pads are great as the child feels a wetness when they have had a wee and know they need to be changed but the pad still holds it all in and keeps pants dry. Nappies tend to soak everything in and children often may not realise so much.
Aesthetics wise, they are similar in appearance to that of a sanitary towel and essentially are used in the same way – the pad is placed into the knickers or pants of said child and absorbs! I did find them a little awkward to attach at times trying to make sure the wider end didn’t go over the end of the pants and become completely useless! However, I soon got the hang of it!
Before we tried him on these, we had tried him on pull up pants which we found didn’t help at all, unfortunately. Jack just felt like he had a nappy on!
Night wise, they were fab. They enabled him to feel like he was a big boy in his pants yet still prevent accident after accident. At night time, he relies too much on his nappy being there and its a habit we need to break, especially as he is getting so good at potty training throughout the day. I am aware that most children aren’t completely dry throughout the night for years to come yet but if we can at least get him almost there, I will be happy!

I'm finding potty training a struggle, my daughter keeps dry in a nappy but wee's in her underwear, she doesn't tell me when she needs the toilet and even says no when I ask her. She's literally leaving to go to the toilet so long shes in pain and squirming around, she's been potty once today after an hysterical outburst, and I've introduced a reward system too x
