Jack is now finally potty trained in the daytime and we are starting to tackle the night time. Taking him out in pants instead of a nappy for the first time was quite daunting – we made sure we had plenty of spare clothes – but he took to it like a duck to water. He did have a few accidents at home but when out and about he has been pretty much perfect and will always tell us if he needs to use the toilet.
As well as taking advice from people I know, I also decided to read up on the subject. Of course, the information is totally subjective as every child is different but I found some advice invaluable. My favourite book that I read comes from a fellow blogger Becky – whose blog is full of great content and helpful tips. The book I am talking about is Potty Train In A Weekend and whilst we didn’t quite manage it in a weekend, the tips are invaluable.
STOCK UP
During our potty training journey for day time, we stocked up on a variety of things to aid us on our way. First things first, a potty and a child’s toilet seat. We bought a fairly cheap potty from the supermarket but I was originally going to get one of these Pourty Easy-to-Pour potties or even one of the many Fisher Price models.
We also invested in a small toilet seat from Tippitoes for him to use when out and about – after all, some toilets are massive – and even had some Dry Like Me Toilet Training Pads for day time in the early days to ease him into not being in a nappy. Now we’ve cracked daytime, we’ve also got some Dry Like Me Night Time Potty Training Pads to help us start to crack night time. I’ve got a full review of the night time pads coming soon.
We also made a big thing about buying him ‘big boy pants’. We’ve bought from a variety of shops, both online and offline, and let him choose what ones he likes. He is so proud of wearing them that he tells all of our friends and family as soon as he sees them – he has got a few packs of the more cheaper options but he does like to buy ones with characters on too – I’ve almost bought Spiderman ones quite a few times despite already owning them!
So these are just a few things that worked for us on our potty training journey. If you’ve potty trained or are in the process, what has worked/is working for you?

Gosh, this is such a long time ago for us, but you sound like you're doing a great job. One thing I found really useful was not going on about it (ie not asking if they needed the potty/toilet all the time). I recall doing that with my daughter and it drove us both mad! Once I stopped, it all went pretty well…
Aw go Jack, what an incredible journey for you both!
We are currently trying to potty train our little girl. She is getting there slowly but does tend to forget she doesnt have a pull up on now. Well done Jack you are doing brilliantly x
Wow this is a while ago now that we had to worry about this and I remember being a bit nervous before we tried. F however breezed through it. I think you've got some great tips there for people about to tackle the whole potty training phase! X
Aww Well done to you both! What a journey potty training is! x
For Emma, it was waiting until she was ready. She was 2 and a half and took only two days to get out of nappies. But I definitely put it down to her being ready rather than my own skills.xx
I have just recently potty trained Daphne (she was 2 in November) and I was absolutely dreading it, it took less than a week with only a handful of accidents…..not tackled nighttime yet though :/ but I am so pleased I waited to do this, just shows she was ready…..people are desperate for my child to grow up ha x
We are just about to hit that stage again – safe to say my least favourite part of having children ;0)
We aren't there yet but I already collect all the tips I can find so thank you.
Such an epic milestone! .. and some super tips Bex x
Oh gosh, we've not started yet, so this is really helpful. I've decided to wait (despite all his little friends being trained already) for when he seems more ready. I'll bookmark this for nearer the time!
Thanks for linking up to #TheList xx
