Knowing The Story Behind Your Jewellery

Do you ever wonder what stories your jewellery could tell if you let it? Sometimes our jewellery is completely new, other times we are left heirlooms or buy things from other people – and the stories they could tell, I bet there are some fascinating ones out there. Most of my jewellery is rather cheap stuff that I bought when I was younger but I do have a few pieces that I wish I could learn more about.

I do love vintage jewellery but I don’t own much jewellery that I could definitely say is vintage. Two pieces that I’d love to know more about however are the necklace my Nan left to me when she died and also my engagement ring. My engagement ring was Steve’s mums who sadly passed away when he was seven – he always wanted to propose with this ring and his Dad let him but we don’t really know the story behind it – whether Steve’s dad bought it new or whether he came across it – and its not something we’ve been inclined to ask. The stories it could tell though – I can only imagine. The places it has seen, the events its been to. Isn’t the idea just so exciting?

My Nan’s necklace is also a piece of jewellery that I know pretty much nothing about. My Nan passed away when I was 9, almost 10 and we went round to my aunt’s one day and I was given the necklace. Its never really been my style and I’ve worn it once in the 17 years since she passed away – now its simply too small to put around my neck anyway – but I would love to know more about it. Who gave it to her? My Grandad or my Step-Grandad or one of her children – perhaps my Dad? Was it given to her by her parents? No one in my family seems to know where it came from and although it isn’t my style it is absolutely beautiful.

I think knowing the story behind your jewellery can be such an incredible thing but of course, it can be quite difficult to actually find out where or when or even who they came from. Do you know any stories about your jewellery?
