How To Make Your Small Space Look Bigger

Have you got that small space in your home that you don’t quite know what to do with? We have – and when we first moved in, we just couldn’t work out what would work best. I eventually turned it into a little study with my books and it looks great!

However sometimes people want to make their small space a little bigger to make it have a more practical use. There are a variety of ways that this can be achieved and I wanted to suggest some of these to you today.

Utilise Good Lighting

Natural light is perfect for making a room look bigger than it is. However not every room will have access to natural light so sometimes you have to be a little creative when it comes to your lighting. Choose lighting that is as close to natural lighting as possible and see how much of a difference it can make.

Get Rid Of Clutter

Clutter seems to be a staple of most houses – we can never quite get rid of it all and make our houses look like show homes – but getting rid of clutter can really open up a room. It is understandable to have some clutter if you’ve just moved with the help of a removals company and are trying to find homes for everything but you’ll be amazed by how much space you’ll seem to have once everything is in its right place.

Use A Mirror

Did you know that a mirror can really help make small spaces look bigger? They make them look larger and even make them look more open. A good mirror reflect both natural and artificial light and can create a sense of depth to a room. If your room fills extremely tiny, add a mirror and see just how much difference it makes.

Choose The Right Furniture

Now it seems pretty obvious that you don’t want massive furniture if you only have a small space. However, if you really do want to make something from it, then some furniture is a must. My little study area is only fit for a chair – computer chair or dining chair – and that’s it – but by using that one piece of furniture, it looks like much more of a functional space. A big sofa might be a no-go but see what furniture options work for you and make your space feel a little more open and homely.

Avoid Too Many Extras

If there is a window in the space, don’t use a curtain – this will make the room feel more closed off and stops the view from outside. Instead opt for blinds or something a little more light and airy. The same goes for rugs. Rugs can be heavy and draw the eye to them – this may mean that they make the room seem even smaller than it already is! Keep the interior minimal and light – don’t make it feel so enclosed.
