How to Decorate Your Home and Make it More Appealing to Guests

Collaborative Post

Doors are often a forgotten part of interior design, unless you make your career as an interior designer. They are the most vital part of turning a house or flat into a home. The wrong doors or mismatched doors can make a home appear uninviting and chaotic. This chaotic appearance can even impact the behaviour of the occupants and put guests off visiting.

The First Thing

Doors are one of the first things guests notice when entering your home. They need to enter through a door. They may notice a long-winding path or steep steps leading to it, but the end point is the first door. A funny door mat or fancy knocker may offer distraction, but if the door looks uninviting, they may turn around without even ringing the bell.

Open Plan

Unless the home is entirely open plan, they’re going to come to another door within the first few minutes of entering. Most families won’t require as much security on the inside as they do on the outside. The internal doors are where the living and entertaining happening. The purpose of interior doors is to separate the spaces. No one wants an audience when using the toilet.

Handles

Guests may not physically touch a door handle until they need to pop to the loo, but this doesn’t mean all door handles should be different. On some level, guests will notice all the door handles, especially if there is jarring design differences.

Glazed Doors

Internal glazed doors are an excellent way to create the illusion of space and light in dark and cramped quarters. Cupboards won’t want glazing, but they can be purchased in matching unglazed options. Glazed doors have frosted glass options for privacy. The windows allow light to travel from one room to another, brightening up windowless hallways with little effort and really leaving a good lasting impression on guests. They also warm up cold areas with the added light.

The Same Design

All doors need to be the same design. Unless specifically trained, guests won’t notice a fire door versus a hollow door. They will notice if one door is a contemporary design and another is a classic design. Different doors for different purposes can be purchased in the same design. All interior doors should be the same height and width as well. Resizing doorframes may not be an option for you. If the doorframes are different sizes, choose a style of door where it is virtually impossible to tell.

Doors will outlast paint and furnishings in terms of both style and durability. Choose doors well suited to your home for an even appearance. You can have the best sofa in the world with all the right cushions and original art hanging on the walls, but guests will notice a poorly fitted door that doesn’t match the others. There will be excuses to not visit again. Word will soon spread and no one will visit.
