Home Improvement Hero | Jack’s Bedroom

Since Jack has become more active, it is nice every now and again for him to chill out and ‘read’ through his books by himself (or with me) instead of running around like a lunatic shouting his head off. When I heard about the Money Supermarket Home Improvement Hero challenge, I had to give it a go. Revamp a room on a £50 budget given by Money Supermarket? Let battle commence.

I had big ideas originally and some of these fell a little short. I really wanted a gallery wall in Jack’s room, with inspiring quotes and cartoons – but since we live in rented accommodation, I soon found out that we weren’t to make any changes to the walls and must use only existing hooks etc. This put a little bit of a downer on the project but I picked myself up and carried on.

Considering what this section of his room used to look like, this is definitely an improvement. With some simple improvements a little bit of DIY, we managed to set Jack up a little reading corner by the window. We used a variety of things, things we already owned and other things we picked up with the £50.
Jack is a nightmare when it comes to storing things away – I often find a book or a jigsaw piece shoved under his cot so I thought the canvas boxes on his chest of drawers would be a handy inclusion, housing all manners of oddities out of his reach. These cost £9.99 and really bring some colour to an otherwise bleak room. The rocking horse was my cousins and Jack is really starting to love it recently so I had to move it from downstairs into his little corner. Other pre owned things were the bits & bobs on the windowsill and chest of drawers which really helped add a little bit of personality to the room.
Whilst I was in the middle of taking photos, Jack decided that as it was a reading corner, perhaps he should place some of his books in the area too. These too were already owned but are sat on another buy from the £50, a blue kids Bentwood chair from Argos for £24.99 – no corner is complete without a chair and this is perfect for him; it is just the right size. It was a nightmare to put it together though!
I have already shown the last thing I want to tell you about on Instagram. As I said before, I really wanted to have a gallery wall but this was vetoed almost straight away…however, not after I’d already got some supplies. With tissue paper and greetings cards from work (roughly £5 with staff discount..a little cheeky I know) and frames from Sainsburys at £7 each – I didn’t want them to go to waste!
After much cutting and slicing, sticking and scrunching with the cards, tissue paper and frames, me and Steve finally came up with these..
Nothing like the original greetings cards at work – these are unique to us and I absolutely love them. We may not be able to have a gallery wall but these will always be on display in Jack’s room as I am so proud of them – the quotes are just so inspiring and I hope Jack may take some inspiration from them when he’s older.
Money Breakdown
Chair – £24.99
Boxes – £9.99
Frames – £14
Cards, tissue paper – £5
Ok, so I slightly went over.. but not by much and that was using my discount too! However, Jack loves his new little corner and I can see him getting a lot of use from it too – it’s nice to get some peace and quiet for once!
Did you complete this challenge? I’d love to see your entry!
