Christmas Gift Ideas For Writers

As a writer myself, I love receiving gifts tying in to do what I do and what I love. I thought I’d share with you today some Christmas gift ideas for writers to give you a little gift inspiration for those lovers of the written word.

Writers are some of the easiest people to purchase Christmas gifts for. Whether the writer is male or female, there is no end of items that will be appreciated. So for some quick and simple ways to fill a stocking or a gap underneath the Christmas tree, read on.

The most obvious gift for writers is something to actually write with. There is a wide selection of pens and pencils available, some in very fancy gift boxes, that make lovely presents. A fountain pen with a bottle of ink, and perhaps some spare nibs, are a good idea if the recipient enjoys the physical act of writing as much as the creative expression. Some good quality velum will go well with a fountain or calligraphy pen {affiliate link}, or a set of personalised stationary. Having the pen engraved with the writer’s name makes it extra special.

For writers who are technologically minded, finding ways of saving and storing their work electronically can be difficult. The new computer memory sticks make a great small gift, and come in a range of colours.

Often writers find inspiration at strange moments. They can be in the bath, on the beach, or in a bowling alley and feel the need to capture what they see or feel. A little notebook and pencil with a stylish cover is just the thing for making notes on the go {affiliate link}.

For writers who are keen to mix with others and gain inspiration and guidance, a great Christmas gift could be a residential workshop vacation. These are held in many different locations, often at small writing schools or in hotels booked for the purpose, and usually run over a few days mid-week or over a weekend. There are structured writing sessions, critiques and plenty of time for more relaxed discussions of writing and authors in general. 

There are also many evening classes and weekend short courses available in specific areas of writing, such as poetry or children’s story writing. These are usually the kinds of things that an individual would love to do but never quite get round to booking them, so to receive one as a gift is a real treat.

A slight variation on the workshop theme, and one that you can tag along on as well, is a literary-based vacation or tour. Visiting locations that have inspired writers before is a great way of seeing an area and immersing one’s self in the heritage of a place. Many towns and cities have at least one novel set there, and it can be great fun to spend a day or so wandering round trying to spot the landmarks mentioned or following the principle character’s footsteps.
