Childhood Crazes | Competition Entry

Growing up in the 90’s, you could hardly move for the latest craze – ranging from Pokemon to Tazos to Tamagotchis and Funfax’s, there was always something for every child, no matter what age or gender they were.

Looking back at this handy little guide of childhood crazes through the ages, it suddenly dawned on me that I must have been an incredibly demanding child as I happened to own a number of things that made it onto the list for the 1990’s. It was fun looking back on some childhood items that I adored and it also made me consider visiting my parents house to get them out of the loft!

POLLY POCKET

These were probably my biggest love of the 90’s – I collected and still own the majority of products they released and my room started to look like a Polly Pocket shrine at one point. I was one of the only girls in my year to have an almost complete collection so when friends came round, they used to gravitate towards my PP collection first.

GOOSEBUMPS

Who didn’t read Goosebumps when they were a child? My stepping stone to Point Horror, I devoured the Goosebumps books as quickly as I possibly could and was always gutted when I had to wait to read more. I never owned many of them, preferring to get them from the library – they got them in quicker than my parents bought them!

FUNFAX

I don’t remember many people having these when I was little – perhaps it wasn’t as much of a craze round my area – but I sure had one and I loved it! I recently found it when up at my parents house and it was interesting to see what I had put in it as a kid.

TAZO

I had forgotten all about these until it came to write this post but oh my, did I collect these! I had so many at one point I didn’t know where to store them. When you think about what they really were – flimsy decorated pieces of card – you realise how children can get sucked into any hype!

PARKER PENS

Okay – I still love Parker Pens to this day – I don’t know why – just seeing them in shops makes me think about how much I loved using mine when I was a child. It sat pride of place on my desk – and I only used it for special occasions – I loved it that much!

POKEMON CARDS

I can’t write a post about my childhood crazes without mentioning what was perhaps the biggest craze of the 1990’s – Pokemon cards. I was a little late to the party when it came to Pokemon and actually bought my first set when out with my neighbours who had all caved in weeks before. Soon however, I was begging my parents to buy me more in the hope of getting a Shiny and some of the cards I didn’t have. I used to trade with my friends too but did anyone else feel like they always drew the short straw?

I also owned jelly shoes, the alien birth pods and a Tamagotchi – what can I say? I was a sucker for the hype! What was your favourite childhood craze when you were growing up?

  1. I LOVED polly pocket! And as for pokemon cards, I preferred collecting the stickers. I remember I once had a really rare one and gave it to my crush in exchange for his phone number LOL x

  2. Haha! I had all of these too as well as puppy in my pocket and furbies! Can't wait to see what Sandy is into as he grows 🙂

  3. I used to love all of those things – wow aha! I remember reading 'Say Cheese and Die' or something along those lines. I also used to be obsessed with Pound Puppies! xxx

  4. I loved Goosebumps books! My Furby was probably my favourite 90s toy, though 🙂
