3 life lessons every parent should teach their child

There are many things that we should be teaching our children to ensure they grow into kind, honest and respectful adults. In this blog, we take a look at three life lessons every parent should instill in their child.

  1. Kindness matters
There’s no denying that kindness makes the world go round, and teaching your child about how much it matters is a must. The good news is, there is almost an endless list of ways you can practice acts of kindness with your little one. For example, it could be something as simple as encouraging them to share their toys with a friend or help out with chores around the house.

On a larger scale, you could teach your child the importance of kindness through giving to charity. You could explain that while they are surrounded by love every day, that’s sadly not the case for many people in other countries – but there are ways that they can help, such as by donating money. So that your child appreciates the extent of their kindness, you could choose to give to a charity project that resonates with them. For example, Human Appeal has a number of children’s charity projects set up, including its education fund and school kit programmes.

  2. Honesty is the best policy

Teaching your child that ‘honesty is the best policy’ is extremely important, and it’s a life lesson that we should all have a firm grasp of, regardless of our age. However, it can be a struggle to suss out just how to get this message across to your little ones in a way that they’ll fully understand. It’s especially difficult if your child has a tendency to sometimes bend the truth as a tactic to get their own way or stay out of trouble. So, as a parent, it’s up to you to teach them right from wrong and the consequences of telling lies.

Children often learn by example, so if your little one witnesses you stretching the truth, it’s likely they’ll follow suit. Instead, demonstrate honesty yourself, being clear that being truthful is the best approach for a happy, wholesome life.

  1. Treat everyone with respect

Whether it’s a family member, friend, school teacher or a stranger, everyone deserves to be respected. What’s more, it’s no secret that if you wish to be respected yourself, you must show this to others. Being a respectful person is a trait we should all have, and it’s definitely something we should be teaching our kids from an early age.

There are a number of approaches you can take to teaching your child about respect. For example, you should educate your little one about manners, teaching them how and when to use respectful phrases such as ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. It’s also important to praise respectful behaviour. Acknowledging moments when your child has acted in a respectful way should encourage them to keep doing so.
