Jack loves writing and creating. He is always writing a story or a poem or drawing lots of different characters and giving them names and personalities. When offered the chance to review 101 Story Starters For Kids {affiliate link}, I knew he’d love the opportunity to write, write, write!
We were sent a KS2 copy of the boys but there is also a girls option {affiliate link} available. If you are like Jack though, he’d be happy to do the girls one too and girls would probably love the boys one too!
The book is described on Amazon as a journal with 101 different ideas to get them thinking, fire their imagination and fill them with enthusiasm! Make writers block a thing of the past and watch the blank pages fill up as inspiration strikes. Whether you enjoy adventure, science fiction, humor or mystery, there’s lots of prompts to get that mind-blowing story started! These story starters are perfect for kids in KS2 aged 7 – 11 but can be used by anyone who is young at heart. Perfect for homeschooling or in the classroom.
As well as 101 exciting prompts, there is guidance on how to use this book. It is wide ruled and has large 8.5″ x 11″ pages of premium quality white paper.
First of all, I absolutely love the cover and so did Jack – it really inspires you straight away with so many different colourful images.
The guidance is very clear – you don’t have to start from the beginning. You can start where you want with a page that grabs you. I think this is something a lot of other things designed to help kids with learning are lacking – they expect you to start from the beginning and sometimes kids don’t want to do that, they want to start where they want to start. As you can see, Jack didn’t start on the first page and has instead been choosing pages that inspire him.
The prompts are generally just a few words, just enough to inspire something in the brain so that the words come flowing out. Jack has been filling out a few of the different pages and I’ve really seen the inspiration strike. He will go from sitting there thinking to scribbling away as the ideas form in his brain.
As you can see, once he started he just couldn’t stop! I’m very intrigued by a rollercoaster that can take you into the past and a best friend with a 4 arm invention!
I love things that help my children with their education and/or help inspire their creativity and this book certainly does that. Jack has filled in quite a few of the pages but he still has plenty more to fill in and I cannot wait to see what he comes up with! The imagination of children is second to none and I’m sure he will come up with a lot of incredible and crazy things!

Oh I LOVE the sound of this book, how fabulous! Such a great way to keep the juices flowing during lockdown and a nice break away from fractions! There is so much freedom with writing and it’s great to get children involved and interested in flowing words early! Sim x

I have been looking at ways in which to get my son to be more creative when it comes to writing and this looks like the perfect book for exactly that. I do love that a line prompt is provided and this then allows the child to write whatever that comes into their mind.

My son is somewhat of a reluctant writer. He has amazing ideas and if you ask him a question then can answer it but writing it down is a different matter. I wonder if this would help spur his creative writing.
