Connecting to the earth through beautifying your outdoor spaces, has long been the pursuit of avid garden enthusiasts the world over, for hundreds of years. From the days of the Druids to the Chelsea Flower and Garden show, in the United Kingdom, we have something of an obsession with our outdoor spaces.
Perhaps it’s because not many of us have anything more than a simple patch of ground to tend, that the space we do have deserves and receives a lot of attention.
Meanwhile, as the winter seems to be lasting forever and the unseasonably warm weather we had last year has well and truly yielded to something more resembling a traditional British winter, we cast our eyes (and our imaginations) forward, to what we want our summertime gardens to look like. Now, you may be thinking that that’s still months away, but consider this – it felt like just the other day that lockdown restrictions were lifted. Oh, wait…

Start doing all of your prep work, now.
This means your edges, hedges, corners, flower beds, weeding, grouting, and relooking your planting plans if you need to, all need to start getting some consideration and love.
At this point, many of your plants have probably died, aside from those that are hibernating some, but certainly, some of your bulbs may be needing attention too.
Check your accessories and gardening tools. They’ve been stored all winter long and will probably need a good cleaning, or even replacing. Get this done early so that you don’t have to be confronted with months’ worth of cleaning and repairing when it’s time to get stuck into your garden come springtime. You want your garden to be gorgeous and family-friendly at the same time.
If you are planning on redoing your garden completely and getting a fresh new start, consider solar lighting for effect or to create special spaces and corners, and order your Grass seed online now, so that you have it ready by the time sowing season starts.
Also, remember to start casting an eye towards the flowers, shrubs, trees, and plants that you want to consider for your summertime garden. In the United Kingdom, we’re blessed with an abundance of rain, so that also means that we’re pretty spoiled for choice when it comes to our garden foliage too. However, take care that you don’t overplant species of flowers or trees that are too thirsty along with equally thirsty companions, which may cause more maintenance issues than you think.
Then, if you’re planning on building a gazebo, conservatory, or another outdoor extension, remember that you need to get the correct planning permission before a single sod of soil is turned, so ensure that you have the right contractors and suppliers that can ideally assist you with the design and installation, as well as dealing with the council.
Remember that your outdoor spaces should always reflect who you are as a person and family, so if you like drumming beside a warm firepit, incorporate that – if you prefer quiet contemplation surrounded by ferns and gorgeous forest-like greenery, think about what that will entail.
Your garden is your sanctuary and your temple, be sure and take good care of it.
