A new business has been set up in Woodbridge, aimed at introducing children to drama and involving them in performance arts. Acting is a lot of fun and a great way to boost a young child’s confidence. Kidz Drama is a new, at-home theatre idea offering a selection of comedy dramas for kids who want to try putting on their own show and performing in front of friends and family.
Kidz Drama scripts are designed for ages 7 and up, but are suitable for the whole family to enjoy. Each play is based on three stages of preparation, rehearsal and performance. Children are encouraged to create and build different sets and scenes as part of the preparation; they have rehearsal time to learn the lines and understand their role in the play and the script is structured for a 20 to 30 minute performance depending on ability. There are also non-acting roles such as director, stage hand and photographer!
Kidz Drama plays are ideal for parties, sleepovers and those rainy holidays when the kids are bored and “can’t find anything to do”!
At only £6.99 each, the plays offer great value and come with a parent’s planning schedule and an invitation template which indicates the chosen role in the play for selected guests. The individual scripts are emailed to parents as a PDF so they can either be printed off easily or performed off mobile devices. One nice feature of the scripts is the colour-coded character lines which help the young actors follow the plot. The comedies are all loosely based on some of the kids’ favourite books, films and TV shows. Princess and the Pea Soup is a “whiffy” re-telling of the classic fairytale; The Case of the Missing Pyjama Case features Baker Street’s favourite detective and Harry Putter and the Mystical Pasty is a new take on wizard’s schools!
Kidz Drama also offers school plays and free drama resources designed for KS2 and KS3 learning stages. The plays – which feature the intriguingly-titled Jurassic Lark – have performance times of around an hour and are ideal for end of term class productions. The school packages come with scene backdrop imagery and sound effect files, so they are very simple to stage. There is also acting advice for teachers and pupils in the free resources section of the website.
Kidz Drama is a small, family project based in Woodbridge and run by Adrian Cory who is also a young adult author. Adrian said: “I used to write short plays which my kids would act out when on holiday. It struck me that, these days, kids defer to the computer too easily when nothing is planned for them. What could be more fun for kids than putting on their own show for parents and friends to enjoy?”
