Crete is an island that has always interested me. Back when I was a baby, my aunt decided to go travelling around Europe before finally settling on Crete and living there for a little while. She has mentioned many times that the island was absolutely beautiful and it is somewhere we should visit and with us aiming to travel a lot more as a family, especially around Europe, Crete is somewhere we definitely want to go.
Crete is Greece’s largest island and has both beautiful beaches and spectacular mountains. The tallest mountain is actually home to the Ideon Cave, which was the birthplace of Zeus according to Greek mythology.
So now you know why we want to visit but here’s what we would like to do…
Hire A Car & Travel Around Crete
We had never hired a car when abroad previously but did so whilst in Cyprus so we would definitely consider doing this in Crete. Of course we would use a reputable company such as Rental Center Crete to hire a car for our travels.
Visit The Ideon Cave
Steve is very interested in mythology, especially Greek mythology, so the Ideon Cave would be a must visit. Jack is starting to become interested in things such as this also and we try to provide educational insight as well when we are travelling so this would be a wonderful way to do so.
Visit The Monasteries & Castles
There are plenty of castles and monasteries to visit on the island so we’d definitely take the opportunity to explore some of these. I love visiting buildings such as these as they always have such stories to tell.
Head To The Beaches
Greece and it’s islands are known for beautiful beaches and Crete is no different. The beaches on the island are absolutely beautiful – and what family doesn’t enjoy a day at the beach? We’d definitely be spending a day or two, dipping our toes into the beautiful blue water!
Trying Out The Food
I don’t know about you but I love Greek food. There’s nothing quite like trying it properly though, cooked on a Greek island by Greek people. We are very foodie people so food would make up a big part of our trip – it is only right to do it properly and enjoy the food.
I’m so excited to visit Crete in the future. I keep looking for good deals – I’m thinking the best time to look now will be either in the Black Friday, Boxing Day or January sales – there’s always great holiday deals on there. It will give me plenty more time to plan my itinerary too!
Have you ever been to Crete?

I’ve only been to Greece once (almsot 10 years ago) but I’d love to go again. Greek food is my absolute favourite! There’s a Greek restaurant not far from me that does amazing authentic Greek food. I’m always reminded of that holiday every time I go.
I have never been to Crete before, but it sounds lovely. Would love to explore the Ideon Cave.
I’ve visited Athens and Delphi, but not Crete yet! I’d love to go one day, the Ideon Cave is on my bucket list as an MA Classics student!
I have never been to Crete before but it sounds lovely and perfect for a family break! My kids would absolutely love the beautiful beaches and being able to dip their toes in the water.
When I headed to Crete it was all about beaches and fresh seafood which was amazing. Although my friend made us do like a 7 hour hike which was interesting x
My friends getting married over there in 2021 – I can’t wait, doing my research now 🙂
I’ve had friends visit Crete and tell me how beautiful it is out there. I love the idea of the whole family going and making it a multi-generational holiday – I might need to suggest this to my family
