Carp fishing is a wonderful activity. It can be really beneficial for both your physical and mental health. But do you know exactly what you need to go carp fishing?
If you haven’t been before, you might not know what you need and where to get it from. You don’t need everything that people suggest but there are some essentials! Here’s a quick guide for you:
A Fishing Licence
You won’t need one of these if you are under 12 years of age but if you are older, you certainly do. Without one, you are breaking the law. They are incredibly affordable too and can be bought online on the Government website or at the Post Office Counter.
Bait
You will certainly need bait when going to finish. Pick up some bulk carp bait and you will have plenty for your first time and then some!
Rods
Have at least a couple of rods to start out with! There are different sizes of rods so it is important to do your research on what is best for you as a beginner. Ask experienced fishermen for help if needs be. Don’t forget to also get something to rest your rods on!

Reels
You will also need reels which you need to match to how you’re going to fish and also the size of it to your rod. There are two basic types – free spool and big pit. Use the free spool reels if you are a beginner to carp fishing.
Landing Net
This will need to be big because carp can be very big! The nets come in a range of sizes so you can choose which one you want however one around the middle size would be perfect! It needs to have a fish friendly mesh and small holes.
Tackle Bag
You will need a decent sized tackle bag or box that can fit all of our gear and keep it organised. You can sometimes get a sturdy box that fits everything in but doubles as a seat too! However you can also get some great light folding seats too.
Suitable Clothing
No one wants to go fishing in clothing that isn’t suitable. You will need plenty of layers and will need some waterproofs such as a coat and trousers. You should also have a hat, gloves and some waterproof boots. Wellies are perfect for fishing!
These are just a few of the essentials that you need for carp fishing. You can also pick up some great accessories however you don’t necessarily need these. If you have friends or family who love carp fishing, it is worth asking them what accessories they recommend. You don’t want to be wasting money on stuff you don’t need – find out what works and what doesn’t before you pay out the money!
There are many benefits to carp fishing. Not only does it get you outside but it does wonders for both physical and mental health and can even start friendships between people. Have you given it a try before?
