If you are looking for a really family-friendly city break, head to Vienna. This relatively small capital city offers a huge list of things for you and your children to enjoy. The authorities there have made a concerted effort to make everything they can as kid-friendly as possible. And it shows it is one of the most child-friendly cities on the planet. Here is just a taste of what you can enjoy while staying there.
An introduction to opera for your children
The Viennese love their opera. They have enjoyed this art-form almost as long as the Italians. Just a few years after the first performance took place in Italy, the Viennese were enjoying opera too. However, watching an opera is not the first activity that leaps into your mind when planning a trip with your kids. But, if you are visiting Vienna, maybe it should.
I was surprised to discover that Vienna state opera events include several that have been specifically created with kids in mind. The city’s ‘music for little people” imitative means even tiny tots can attend a performance. Max and Moritz is a fairly short and most kids enjoy the operas that are based around fairy stories like Hansel and Gretel and Pinocchio.

A nighttime trip to the zoo
If you are looking for something to do in the evening, consider taking your kids to Schönbrunn Zoo. Even if you have been during the day, going back at night is still worth doing. Everyone gets a set of infrared binoculars to play with. The only problem is that your kids will have to be aged at least 10 to be able to enjoy a night-time zoo visit.
Spend the day at the Schönbrunn palace
During daylight hours you can also visit the palace. They have worked really hard to make it a memorable place for children.
Your kids get to dress up in period costume and learn about the differences between the classes during the time the palace was being built. Later, they can go outside and play in the Maze and Labyrinth.
Visit the Prater Amusement Park
This quirky little amusement park is sure to delight. You get a great view of the city from the 200ft Ferris wheel. Plus, there is an old-school ghost train, Ice Mountain and a few other rides. When you are finished, you can go off and enjoy the park itself. It has a bike park, jungle gyms, a skate park, even pony rides at certain times of the year. If you like picnicking, this is a good spot for it.
