Updating a living room can be an arduous process. I am always changing my mind with how I want it to look – always moving my furniture around and decluttering – or even buying new things. Here are a few ideas for updating your living room to ensure guests feel welcomed and at home.
Have Photos On Display
A home without photos on display doesn’t feel very friendly or homely to me. We have various photos around the house and even some canvases too. Something I love to keep on display is a photo book. We have different ones for different events or occasions in our life – I’m actually planning on making a couple more now Hannah has joined our family and we have done so much more this year.
I find that photo books on a bookshelf or a coffee table can make a really great discussion point too – friends and family who visit will often like to take a look at the photos, flicking through the pages.
You don’t need to overload your living room with family photos but adding a few images around the room definitely makes it feel like it’s your home rather than just a building with some of your things in.
Add Some New Soft Furnishings
I don’t know about you but I am a sucker for soft furnishings and always end up with some new items when I go shopping. I love a good blanket – the fluffier and bigger the better although I end up fighting the kids and the dogs for them! The odd new cushion or throw can make all the difference to a room too.
These can easily be picked up for just a few pounds in any high street shop or on an online marketplace.
Turn The Room Around
Sounds simple, right? But it can be a lot of work to turn a whole room around. However the results are amazing. We’ve recently moved our sofa back against the wall facing the window and seem to have so much more space than what was there before. We’ve also moved some other items around and relocated some to other rooms and it definitely looks a whole lot better!
Our Christmas tree is in the corner of the room by the window now and moving our sofa round was definitely the right choice to give us more space.
Remove Clutter
It seems like I am always dealing with clutter. I have a 12 year old boy, a 6 year old girl and a baby under the age of 1. There is always some toy, bit of paper, school item or random thing in the way or dumped where it shouldn’t be. I always feel like I am going round in circles – my coffee table will spend a day looking bare and perfect with simply the essential items on it. Then the kids descend and it looks like I haven’t done a thing at all.
By removing clutter, you will instantly update your living room and make it look like a welcoming place to be.
Hang The TV
Nearly every living room has a TV. If yours does, consider making more space in the room by hanging the TV on the wall with a wall bracket. It instantly gives you more space in the room and makes a great feature point. You will definitely need someone to help you with this as this is not a one person job.
Organise Your Bookshelves
As an avid reader, I have a couple of bookcases in my living room and I definitely think that organising them is a great way to update your living room. I have previously organised by colour; other times by size and other times by author. I do have large collections of some authors so by author is usually my preferred choice but I do love the look that a colour coordinated bookshelf gives to a room.
These are just a few of my top tips for updating your living room. With Christmas nearly here, many of us will have been moving our living rooms around anyway so why not take the opportunity to make some changes that you will enjoy and that will make the room a lovelier place to be?
