Collaborative Post
I have spoken at length about our housing situation recently and how we are currently in temporary accommodation. However it finally seems like we are seeing some movement in terms of being permanently housed which has got me thinking about home security.
We have been lucky enough to live in really safe areas in the past but as we don’t know where we will be, home security is, of course, going to be paramount. We have been looking into different home security measures and I wanted to share with you some top tips for improving your home’s security.
Consider Shutters
You may not have considered shutters instead of blinds and curtains before but they are a great addition to the home when trying to improve it’s security. Not only are they durable and long lasting but they are fitted to the window pane so they cannot move around. People are unable to see into rooms fully and you can choose DIY shutters to suit your home’s decor. We are certainly considering these when we move!
Install A Camera
Perhaps an obvious one but a tip I am going to mention nonetheless. You can usually pick them up for a fairly affordable price and monitor them from your smartphone. We have a Ring doorbell that we received as a free gift from a broadband package which we will be installing when we move. We are also going to pick up some cameras for inside and outside.
Use Lighting
If you are especially worried about home security, it may be worth investing in some lights for your front and back garden that are motion activated. This way you will know when someone is on your property after darkness falls.

Add A Key Safe
Are you prone to leaving a spare key under a pot for family and friends? This is obviously not advisable and a key safe is a great alternative. We got my grandparents one last year so that the carers, extended family and friends can get into the home as and when needed as their mobility is not the best – this saves them cutting keys for everyone but keeps their property safe too.
Don’t Keep Valuables Out
It might be tempting to leave devices and jewellery out on display if you think all other elements of your home security are up to scratch but why take the risk? Store them away when not in use because even the highest of home security won’t stop some thieves from trying their luck!
Use Smart Devices Effectively
Smart devices are fantastic for home security. Not only can you get smart CCTV cameras and doorbells but you can also get smart lighting and smart plugs. These can be used effectively to make it seem like you are home even when you are not. You can set timers for lights to come on or even control them from your smart phone!
These are just a few of my top tips for improving your home security. What steps have you taken to make sure that your home is secure?
