Tips For Changing Careers

Collaborative Post

The pandemic and lockdown had people changing their perspectives on life completely. Whereas before, many were happy to just accept the job they were in, no matter if they enjoyed it or not, it caused a lot of people to re-evaluate how they spend their time. Being locked down meant we had a lot of time to contemplate and deliberate and this led to people deciding they no longer were happier doing a mediocre career, or even enjoyed what they did. Because of this, there has been a huge spike in people looking for other careers. It is never too late for a fresh start and to do the thing you really love, however it can feel scary. Here are some top tips if you are looking to change your career.

Think of something you are really interested in

While it might sound obvious, it is important to think of what you are interested in when searching for a job. This is because there are many career paths within this that you might not have even thought of that you will love. For example, if you like to write, you might think of a journalist as your first option, but the fields within this are vast, for example, you could be a PR, a blogger, a content writer or write for an SEO management company. There are many things in the field you won’t know until you research it.

Speak to others that already do the job you are looking into

If you know the career that you wish to swap to, it can be a good idea to speak to someone who already does it. This will enable you to get an idea of what you need to get into the field and also what the day to day duties of the role entails. The thought of a job can often be very different to the reality so by doing this you will get a realistic look at what you will be doing.

Make sure you are financially viable

It is important to think of finances when changing careers as if you are going into something completely new, you might be looking at a pay cut. Of course, happiness is always worth it, but you need to ensure that you can still live the life you are accustomed to and if not, that you will still be able to pay your necessary bills.

Be prepared to do new qualifications

Some jobs will require you to have certain qualifications, so make sure you either have these or are ready to get your study hat on for a while. It might seem like a lot of work, but will be worth it when you are in the job that you have been dreaming of!

These are just a few top tips for changing careers that should help you to make a decision. Whatever you do, remember that it isn’t permanent and you can always go back to something you know, or try something new – the world is your oyster!
