The Various Types of Thermometer Compression Fittings

Thermometers are one of the most versatile tools out there. There are several different types, each of which is most ideal for particular uses. For instance, an infrared thermometer is better for the medical, industrial, and automotive sectors.

As it turns out, there is a wide range of accessories that can enhance the abilities of these tools. Compression fittings are one of those accessories. Check out the variety of compression fitting types below.

What are Compression Fittings?

When it comes to thermometers, compression fittings are the link between the measuring environment and sheathing thermocouple. There are other compression fittings that are more ideal for things like plumbing, but these are a bit different than those. Using a compression fitting for a thermometer allows for a more precise adaptation of that device.

When the compression fitting has been installed, the thermocouple can then be inserted to meet certain length standards. Just as importantly, they are clamped securely in place. Individual measurements can then be executed with preferred installation lengths. Moreover, it allows for a faster, more straightforward exchange with the thermocouple.

Stainless Steel Compression Fitting

Perhaps the most common type of compression fitting is made of stainless steel. Both the compression cone and the housing are constructed of this material and it’s great for a few reasons. For starters, it is pressure-tight, so it won’t just pop off if there is too much pressure. It is also highly resistant to high temperatures which is why it’s so ideal for automotive and industrial settings.

Once the fitting has been fixed into place, there is a permanent connection between the compression cone and the sheathing thermocouple. The only way the sheathing thermocouple can be removed is if the compression cone goes with it. While that might be a slight hassle, stainless steel compression fittings are highly versatile.

Ceramic Compression Fitting

There is one thing to get out of the way quickly. These fittings are not entirely made of ceramic. The housing is still made of stainless steel. It is the compression cone that is actually made from ceramic, which is what separates it from other fittings. The ceramic cone is great at absorbing vibrations and resisting high temperatures.

There is one major advantage to using a ceramic compression fitting versus a stainless steel one. Whereas the stainless steel requires a permanent connection between the cone and sheathing thermocouple, the ceramic one does not. A new compression cone can be used while still using the same sheathing thermocouple. That kind of versatility goes a long, long way.

Brass Compression Fitting

Like ceramic compression fittings, brass is also great at resisting high temperatures and absorbing vibrations. It is also pressure-tight, creating a secure seal. The usage temperature for brass is slightly lower than it would be for stainless steel, however.

That said, brass cones are used more frequently because they have better compression behavior, especially with smaller diameters. Like the stainless steel component, there is a permanent connection between the cone and sheathing thermocouple.

Teflon Compression Fitting

Similar to the ceramic compression fitting, a Teflon fitting isn’t totally made of Teflon. The housing is still stainless steel but the cone is made of Teflon. There is a definite advantage in that the sheathing thermocouple can be quickly replaced, or the length can be modified multiple times.

Comparatively speaking, they are only able to hold up to temperatures of 200 degrees Celsius. They may not hold up quite as well as their counterparts, but the versatility can certainly go a long way. The application and type of job can have a huge impact on which fitting is most ideal.
