We love books in our house and the kids are bookworms just like me! When we were offered the chance to read and review Emma Rattray’s new book The Rug Bear, I had to say yes!
Written by Emma Rattray and illustrated by Michael Terry, this is a fun story about having fun with friends and ensuring no one is left out and is suitable for parents to share with children between the ages of 0-5.
Bear is playing hide and seek in the forest with his good friends Lion and Fox. A day of games makes him very tired and he falls into a very deep sleep. Different animals mistake him for a nice cosy rug and settle down for a rest – they are shocked when he wakes up!
The book is wonderfully illustrated by Michael Terry – the illustrations are cute and colourful and completely encompass the animals they are meant to be. They really add to the story and help you to imagine exactly how the story is panning out.
The story itself is a rhyming story which I think is perfect for children of a young age. I have definitely noticed with my children that rhyming stories capture their attention for a lot longer than non rhyming stories so the rhymes paired with the illustrations makes for a wonderful tale that kept my kids enthralled.
Jack and Olivia really loved this book! It is such a funny story – the kids loved it when the different animals and insects mistook Bear for a rug and rested their weary feet – even more so when Bear finally woke up! It is a lovely tale of friendship and having fun and is a must have for bookshelves. It is certainly taking pride of place on ours.

Rhyming stories work so well for this age group, I agree. I loved reading to my son when he was younger.

The illistrations seem really lovely. Mine love anything with animals. I think they’d love that it rhymes too.
Nothing like a good book. My daughter has a huge book collection but we love to adding to new ones into the mix. Those illustrations are amazing.
