Brooches are something of a dark horse in the jewellery world at the moment. Although they have literal centuries of evidence of being extremely popular among the social elite of Western society, around the end of the 20th century, they became suddenly unfashionable. That’s all about to change, however, as ‘80s and ‘90s fashion are back in the 2020s.

Pearly
Pearls are one of those stones that have gone through a similar process to brooches themselves, in that they have a long history of popularity, but have recently become unfashionable. In the 1990s, pearls began to be viewed as ‘old lady’ jewellery, and thus they dropped out of style for the next couple of decades.
The 2020s, however, are the revival of ‘old lady’ fashion, pearls included. Expect to see a lot of pearl jewellery in the coming years, brooches included. Pearl brooches can be minimalistic, for example a simple bar with pearls accenting it, or they can be more ‘big and bold’. Baroque pearls are generally large in size, with unique shapes to them that make them very appealing; these pearls are often used for the more dramatic brooches.
These pearl brooches are great for people who like more ‘traditional’ fashion; blouses and shirts, for example. This links the pearls of today with the pearls worn by grandmas and grannies in decades past, a worthy fashion statement to be sure.
Glittering
Brooches with glittering gemstones, whether they’re the ‘real-deal’ diamonds or crisp crystals, are welcome at any time. They’re sure to be a big hit in the 2020s, reminiscent of the glamour of Art Deco brooches of the 1920s. If you’re interested in a full-on Art Deco revival, then symmetrical, architectural brooches with sparkling gemstones are perfect for evoking the luxury and glamour of the roaring ‘20s.
It’s easy enough to believe that the 2020s will perhaps be less glamorous than the 1920s, at least the decade hasn’t had the most glamorous start. Don’t let that fool you, however, as the future can be as bright and sparkly as you’re willing to make it if you know which accessories to utilise.
A brooch with some sparkle to it is great for a formal occasion or a party – even if it’s just over Zoom. Dressing the upper half is a talent which we’ve all acquired to some extent in the last year, and brooches are a great addition to that set-up.
Colourful
Perhaps a direct response to the minimalism that has reigned supreme in recent years, or perhaps just an attempt to brighten up people’s lives in the 2020s, colourful jewellery of all kinds is taking the stage this year. When it comes to brooches, this can be a colourful hunk of plastic, or as luxurious as coloured gemstones like purple amethysts, green peridots, or blue aquamarines.
Animal themes are another popular trend coming this year, which is again likely linked to brightening up the overall mood in light of the last year. These two trends come together in a fantastic way, equating to stunning jewellery that can definitely put a smile on your face when you’re feeling glum.
Bright plastics are a cheap and fabulous way of bringing pops of colour into your clothes through brooches. You can team a more ‘serious’ outfit with an over-the-top piece of jewellery like an acrylic parrot brooch, with bright colours that catch the eye. Equally, you can use a myriad of colours throughout your outfit as well as in your brooch for a very summer-friendly outfit.
