Moving home is a lot of hassle, but there are times when it can be essential. Your home is somewhere that you should feel safe and comfortable. It should never be a source of distress or a place that is dangerous. Of course, all homes come with their issues. But when does an issue become big enough that you need to move? This post lists a few clear signs that it’s time to relocate.
The house is falling apart
Old homes will occasionally need repairs and this is something you have to live with. But if you’re constantly battling one structural problem after the next, you should consider whether it’s worth the constant stress. You should be particularly wary of looming major problems like foundation problems, a sagging roof or even the threat of coastal erosion if your home is on a cliff. If there’s no affordable or feasible way to deal with the ongoing damage, it could be time to move out. If you need to sell your house fast and it has major defects, consider using a home buying company that buys properties in any condition – the price they offer may not be great, but you may not be able to sell your property fast through other means.
You can no longer afford to live there
If maintaining your property is getting you into major debt, it could also be time to think about moving out. Downsizing or moving to a cheaper location may be necessary if you’re unable to keep up with the bills. A lot of people find that they have to do this in retirement – don’t wait until you’re already in financial ruin to move out.
You feel completely isolated and depressed
Moving somewhere distant or remote can seem like an adventure at first. However, if you’re unable to make any new friends, you could quickly find yourself getting depressed and isolated. In other cases, events like the loss of a spouse, a breakup or kids leaving the nest can contribute to loneliness. Moving somewhere more urban or moving closer to loved ones could help you to be happier.
You don’t feel safe in your home
You should also consider moving if you feel unsafe. Dangers that you shouldn’t put up with include abusive family members, hostile neighbors, a high local crime rate, natural disaster threats or dangerous home defects that you can’t afford to repair. Move to a safe location before the danger escalates and it’s too late.
You can’t sleep because of noise
Disturbances like noise can also be worth moving to get away from. This could include noisy neighbors, roads, airplanes or local bars. If you can’t get to sleep at night and you’ve tried different methods to block out the noise (including filing noise complaints), consider whether it’s time to move to a new location so that you can finally get a good night’s sleep. Moving to get away from bad smells could also be justified (such as if you live near a sewage works that is making you feel sick).
