Setting Aside A Budget For Home Renovations

We are currently renting but with a substantial deposit set aside, we are planning on buying our own property in the not too distant future. Something we have been considering is setting aside a budget for home renovations too so that we can get started with anything we want to change once the home is ours.

I’ve seen how costly renovations can be. Steve’s parents have recently downsized from a 4 bed house in Hertfordshire to a three bed bungalow in Lincolnshire which is requiring a lot of work. It is going to be perfect for them once it is all finished though.

We’ve been considering what adjustments we would have to make in any house we get. Hopefully we’d love the majority of a house if we were choosing to buy it but I doubt anyone loves a house 100% that they are buying. There is always something people will want to change.

When we do move house, we have considered moving further north to get the most for our money. The plan is for my mum to eventually join us, whether that is in her own property or moving into ours. This has meant we will be looking for certain things and have been doing our research. My mum has arthritis in her legs and feet and it is getting steadily worse – I am worried that it is going to cause problems with walking and balance so we have been looking at stairlift prices for the future. We were going to get one for my Dad before he passed and my grandparents have one – they’re a great thing to have in the house to help people retain some independence and still be able to go up and down the stairs.

As well as things such as stairlifts, I’ve got to consider a multitude of other things if I am renovating. I want to make sure I have a substantial enough savings pot to be able to cover all of these requirements and that won’t leave me short. I read and watch in awe as other bloggers have shared their blog posts, Instagram stories and YouTube videos of the renovations they have done – from making adjustments for accessibility to completely changing their kitchen. I’d love to say I’d keep the kitchen and bathroom of the property we buy completely as we find it but I’d be lying – everyone I know has theirĀ dream home – don’t they?

It will be a tough old slog, setting aside money for the stuff we will want – or even possibly need – done and then getting it all sorted but I know that the final result will be worth it. I can’t wait to finally own my own property and be able to call it mine, making it look exactly as I’ve always dreamed my very own house to be!

Have you ever renovated your house? Was this out of choice such as a new kitchen or out of necessity such as a stairlift for accessibility issues? I’d love to find out more!
