Selling Your Business: When Is The Right Time To Let Go?

You started your business from scratch and it became a true passion project. What began as a small idea in your head bloomed into a little business with plenty of happy customers – and maybe even some employees. You’re really proud of your work, though you think it might be time to sell up and move on.

Business owners often reach this point in their professional lives, but when is the right time to sell your business? This is a tough question to answer because there isn’t a “correct” answer to it, but there are some instances and signs when it might make more sense to offload your business and do something else.

You’ve lost interest in the project

You started building your business and watching it grow to new heights over many months and years. It was exciting, but you’ve hit a brick wall. Growth is stagnant – you’re still making money, but you’re not gaining a huge chunk of new customers. It’s all very steady, which is good, but it’s made you lose interest in the project.

Put simply, you’re not enjoying yourself anymore. The passion has fizzled out – and you’re eager to try something new or start a completely different business. If you’re not giving your all to your business, then why stick around? It makes perfect sense to sell in this scenario so you can receive some cash and invest it into your future endeavours.

There’s a lot of interest from potential buyers

Your business could be at the peak of its popularity, and you’re loving every second of it, but that could mean it’s the best time to sell. You may think this is counterintuitive – but it’s simply business. There’s a surge in demand for your business, and you’re always being contacted by investors or bigger companies that want to snap you up.

The offers come flooding in to the point where it makes logical sense to sell your business, bag a huge profit, and move on to a new adventure. Consult with business advisors to evaluate your company if you’re in a position like this. Know how much it’s truly worth before accepting any offers – people will always try to lowball you. If you receive loads of offers that exceed your valuation, then that’s the biggest green light ever to sell your business.

Your life circumstances change

We are so often dictated by outside circumstances in the business realm. You’re running a very successful company – but how is this impacting your life? It’s all too common for people to become so caught up in their business that they neglect family and friends. You can run yourself into the ground and be completely burnt out, in which case it makes sense to sell so you can get your personal life back on track.

Similarly, what if you’re about to have your first child? That changes everything, and you might not want the stress of running a business alongside this. Selling it will also give you plenty of money to put towards raising your new child. If your life circumstances change, then sometimes it makes sense to part ways with your business.

The bottom line is that there will always be times when selling your business makes loads of sense. Most of the time, these three situations are the best times to let go and move on from your business to new pastures.
