How often do you treat yourself or add a little self-care into your life? With the cost of living crisis still impacting people’s bank balances and squeezing the fun out of life, finding the extra cash to splash out on frivolous activities isn’t always feasible.

But being able to treat yourself can boost your mental health and help you out when things are getting too overwhelming, especially when life and, indeed, the British never-ending winter is taking its toll.

Silence

Finding the silence in an otherwise busy world is a free and often overlooked aspect of life. It can help you calm your nervous system, regulate your breathing, and give you time away to think about life or nothing at all. Taking some time in peace and quiet can boost your mental health. In fact, studies have shown that just a few minutes of silence can be beneficial to your mental health. To take this one step further and increase the value of silence, you can try a sensory deprivation tank, which allows users to float in a closed tank that eliminates sounds and light. At the same time, your body is supported in water filled with salts for a physical and mental rejuvenating experience.

Shopping Trip

A shopping trip doesn’t need to be expensive; It can be just as therapeutic to get out of some window shopping in your favourite stores rather than perusing the aisles of your local supermarket under the harsh white light. Even the act of window shopping can help to boost your mood and give you some sense of normalcy, especially if you don’t have a shopping list in mind and you can simply while away the hours browsing. If you can’t get out to go shopping, then online shopping can be just as beneficial. Whether you actually purchase anything is up to you, but luxuries such as women’s rings, a new outfit or even something for the home because you like it rather than need it can be exactly what you need.

Schedule Time

If you are treating yourself as an afterthought, then you need to stop. You need to put your needs front and centre, much like you do every other aspect of your life. Be it scheduling time with friends, time alone to read that new book or doing something you have been putting off, Put it in your diary and commit to doing it. It doesn’t need to be expensive; there are plenty of free options that you can choose from that can be beneficial to your life and give that much-needed mental health boost. But instead of neglecting your self-care needs, simply treat it like an appointment that needs to be done and put it in your diary.

Eat The Good Food

Never underestimate the power that eating good food can have on your mental health. While it’s best to stick to a nutritious diet, taking the odd meal to have something you are craving or wouldn’t normally eat can invoke happiness and joy. Now, this doesn’t mean you should go out and overindulge in all the goods that make you feel good; but the occasional dietary indulgence can do wonders for the body and mind. Whether visiting your favourite restaurant, takeout, or cooking a sumptuous meal that hits all the right spots, you need to allow yourself to enjoy the power of food and feel satiated.

There are many ways you can pamper yourself and make yourself a priority. These are some tips you can try out, but remember, ultimately, what works for you will be personal, and only you can decide.
