Reducing Our Plastic Usage In The Home

Collaborative Post

If you have seen my social media recently, especially my Instagram, you will see that I have recently moved house. With moving house as you can imagine, I’ve been using a lot of cardboard boxes, masking tape and things like that. I’ve been thinking about different ways to reduce our usage of certain materials in the house, especially plastic.

Here are my top tips for reducing our plastic usage in the home…

Use Our Reusable Bottles And Our Water Filter Jug

We’ve got multiple reusable bottles in the house so we really need to start using them more, especially as we are stuck in the house at the moment. By reusing our reusable bottles and using our water filter jug, I hope to reduce the amount of bottled water coming into the house and needing to be recycled. There are some great ways to reduce plastic in the kitchen.

Go Plastic Free For The Post I Am Sending Out

Whilst I don’t send out post daily, I do run a lot of competitions on the blog and my social medias and thus have to send out prizes. I am planning to cut down on the plastic I am using in this area too and am considering completely plastic free packaging – Lil Packaging is the perfect company for this and suits all my packaging needs.

Use Natural Products

Have you noticed how many cleaning products and personal hygiene products come completely encased in plastic? I am thinking about trying more natural products for cleaning and personal hygiene. It scares me to think just how much plastic can be in one house when it comes to all the different products we buy from the supermarket. I’ve been researching making my own natural products or ordering from companies who use a limited amount of packaging.

Consider A Refill Station

This is obviously quite difficult to do at the moment as I don’t know if the ones in my local area are open. However there are refill stations in the local area where you can get numerous different products such as detergents, pasta, oils. All you have to do is take your own container and fill it up!

Get Milk Delivered

I used to get this delivered by my brother (the local milkman) in the village we were living in but he doesn’t cover the area we moved to now. I need to find a company who delivers to us and I’ll be getting them to deliver in glass bottles so we can put them straight back out for collection once they are finished.

Shop The Local Market

Again, this may not be possible at the moment due to the current pandemic as many of our local markets have shut down for the foreseeable future. However when this is all over, I will definitely be visiting our local markets to get plenty of fresh produce – fruit, vegetables, meat, cheeses and more. Do you shop your local market?

So these are the ways I plan to reduce our plastic usage in the home. Have you got any other tips that I could utilise?

  1. We are conscious about using too much plastic, but it is so much harder now that we are limited to wear we shop. Love the idea of getting milk delivered again

  2. I have been replacing all sorts in my house in a bid to go plastic free, its hard and I find some things work out more expensive but I fell its worth it. I have been looking in to refillable fabric softner but as you said at the moment getting refills is tricky. Most over cleaning products I have got online are completely plastic free. Try using a dish bar instead of washing up liquid, they are great!

Some great ideas there, thank you. As a family, it’s important that everyone plays their part and recycle where possible. When it comes to reducing plastic, I also have milk delivered. I love the idea of a refill station, alas there isn’t anywhere local to me that does that. Such a shame!

Some swaps are so easy, like multiple-use bottles and bags but then others are so much more expensive and that has to be considered too. Mich x

  5. Those are some great tips to keep in mind. We usually do the 3 R’s and also shop at our local market to avoid getting unnecessary plastic.

  6. We use very little single-use plastic in our house. Sadly we still receive some food items that are wrapped in plastic and it frustrates me that there isn’t more that food companies are doing to change this.

  7. I think it’s great to cut down on the amount of plastic we use. I always try and carry a reusable bottle around with me

  8. I’ll have to look into Lil Packaging. I post quite a bit and I’m always worried about plastic waste.

Our milkman offers glass bottles again just like the old days. Works out slightly dearer, but happy to pay the price
