Have you ever thought about fertility tracking? Many of my friends have tracked their fertility in the past and whilst we haven’t yet done so (although we were about to before falling pregnant with baby girl), I can see how much it can help you when starting your journey towards trying for a baby.
Jack, whilst having been spoken about, was actually conceived on contraception but both the baby we unfortunately suffered a miscarriage with and baby girl were planned – we weren’t actively trying at that time (we actually planned to start trying this summer) but we said if it happened, it happened. Had it not just happened though we would have definitely considered tracking our fertility cycles and this is where Natural Cycles comes in.
Natural Cycles is a hormone free fertility app created by Dr Raoul Scherwitzl and his wife Dr Elina Berglund. Over 5,000 Swedish women conceived within less than three months of starting to use the app and it has now just launched in the UK. Dr Elina Berglund began working on the app when she wanted a break from the pill but couldn’t find any good form of natural birth control – so she created an algorithm for herself.
Named after her and Dr Scherwitzl’s daughter Alba, the algorithm works by identifying a woman’s ovulation and fertile window by tracking both her period and temperature. Women are asked to record the temperature under their tongue each morning and enter it into the app. The algorithm then determines whether you are fertile on that day. Recent studies have found Natural Cycles to be as effective as the contraceptive pill.
I must admit that I find the whole idea of the app completely fascinating and it is definitely something I would consider using if we plan to have more children in the future. I have already mentioned it to friends who are trying to conceive as the results truly are amazing – over 5,000 women getting pregnant within less than three months of using the app are great figures. For my friends that are struggling to conceive, this truly could be the light in the dark for them and I’m hopeful that this will help them somehow.
Have you ever tracked your fertility? Would you use this app?
