Having thick healthy hair is something that most people want—the glisten of the hair in the sun, the shine of healthy hair.
Yet, most of us have some issues with our hair. It might feel thin, fall out, or you may suffer from a high level of breakage.
So how can you improve the health of your hair and have thicker-looking hair?
Cut it off
It might sound dramatic, but one of the best things you can do to make your hair look and feel thicker is to reduce the length.
The very ends of your hair might look thin, have split ends, or look a bit wispy.
Cutting your hair so that it is all in a neater line gives the appearance of thicker hair. You can add more volume at the same time if you ask a stylist for layers.
Volume products
Add a healthy dose of (temporary) fullness and list by using a shampoo and conditioners containing a volume-boosting ingredient.
While the impression of thicker hair may be temporary, it can give you the thicker hair you are looking for.
A leave-in conditioner that also tackles damaged, brittle or thin hair can help improve your hair look.

Cosmetic help
If you are struggling with seeing too much scalp, and it is making you feel self-conscious about your hair, there are a few things that you can do.
A short-term solution for this with longer hair is lifting root powders and hair mascara. The colour can limit the appearance of your scalp.
If you have a shaved head or hair less than a few inches short, you can consider SMP treatment. It is a non-surgical option to create the desired hairline and the look of more hair on the head. Check out SMP Liverpool for more information about how the treatment works.
Colour
The colour of your hair can have an impact on how thin or thick it looks. A single colour can make the hair look flat, lifeless and thin. However, a tone with highlights and lowlights can give the hair more dimension – and the appearance of thickness.
Brightening colour like honey blonde, with a lighter brown, often works well.
Diet
What is happening with your hair could indicate you are missing some vital vitamins and minerals from your diet.
Some food can help you get that gloriously thick glossy hair you are looking for.
- Soybeans are filled with B2, magnesium, and iron
- Mango has silica, B6 and folate
- Figs are packed with iron, potassium, Vit A & E and magnesium
- Flaxseeds (you can also make a flaxseed hair mask at home) have magnesium, omega-3, selenium and Vit B1.
- Dark leafy greens filled with fibre, potassium and a range of vitamins
Fatty fish can also pack a considerable amount of fats for a healthy heart, hair and more. Take a look at what you are eating and modify it to support your hair growth and health.
