Making My House A Home

It is complete and utter madness but even after living in this house for three years, it doesn’t quite seem like home yet. Perhaps its because we haven’t finished adding to our family yet. Perhaps it is because we know we will eventually be moving on. Or perhaps its because our tastes and ideas have changed over the past few years too and now we want something different.

Back when I was pregnant with Jack, we faced some bad times – we came home from holiday to a letter from our estate agent saying that our landlady wanted to move back in and we basically had two months to find somewhere else to live. Heavily pregnant, I couldn’t face searching and searching to no avail and we moved back in with my parents until after Jack was born. We did find a place just before Jack was born though and were given a moving in date of exactly one month after Jack’s birth. Fantastic. Only problem was the house was unfurnished so we had to buy a whole load of things to furnish our new place.

Now I don’t know about you but when I was pregnant…I didn’t always make the most sensible decisions when it came to certain things. Sure I stayed away from alcohol and the food you aren’t supposed to eat but I also thought a bed with slats and a cream sofa would stand the test of time with a baby (now toddler) in the house. It won’t. It has got to the point that I am so embarrassed of the sofa and I just want rid. I’ve managed to replace the bed after we actually had to – toddlers like to think beds are trampolines, you know – but I haven’t been able to afford to replace our sofa or even get ours removed. Things are just too tight.

That doesn’t me stop me looking though and I’ve found a whole variety of sofas that have taken my fancy…if only I had the funds!


The sofa is generally the largest item in your living room, a real focal point so it needs to be practical but pretty. I’m leaning towards a leather sofa like we had in our first home together. It is much more practical than a fabric one and would hopefully stand the test of time – especially if we decide to have more children.
Whilst I find fabric sofas are often much prettier, I am sure I could make any new sofa feel more comfy and more homely. Perhaps then my house will start to feel more like a home.
