Making Healthy Lifestyle Changes: A Guide For 2022

Collaborative Post

The lifestyle choices you make can have a major bearing on your physical and mental health. In this guide, we’ll discuss some adjustments you can make to live your happiest, healthiest life in 2022.

Embracing exercise

The new year is traditionally a time when many people embark upon new fitness regimes. In many cases, this is to try and lose weight. Although it can be beneficial to increase activity levels to lose weight, it’s so important to understand the additional advantages of embracing a more active lifestyle. Regular exercise reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, dementia and some types of cancer, and it can also lift your mood, reduce stress and make you feel more confident. If you want to do more exercise, there are all kinds of ways to get fit. From home workouts and exercise classes to joining a gym, a team or a sports club or getting out into the great outdoors, you can work up a sweat and have loads of fun. Set realistic activity goals, build your fitness gradually and vary workouts to keep them interesting.

Monitoring alcohol intake

Many people overindulge during the festive season, but there’s a difference between enjoying the odd drink and drinking heavily. If you’ve noticed that you’re drinking more than usual, or you’ve started using alcohol as a means of coping or trying to feel more confident or relaxed, it’s important to monitor your intake. Keep a diary. If you’re drinking more than the recommended intake, try to take steps to reduce alcohol consumption. Don’t buy alcohol for your home, alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks when you go out and try to ensure that you have at least 3 alcohol-free days per week. If you’re worried that you’ve lost control, you crave alcohol, or you feel unable to get through the day without it, alcohol rehabs can help. You may also find it beneficial to contact nonprofits and to talk to your doctor. There are different therapies and self-help treatments available.

Improving nutrition

Diet is always a buzzword at this time of year. Most people go on a diet to either get healthy or lose weight. After the indulgences of the holidays, it’s natural to want to make changes. If you do want to improve your diet, try to focus on nutrition. Aim to create or follow a healthy eating plan, which will provide your body with all the nutrients it needs. Avoid fad diets and use a food diary to monitor your intake of different types of foods and essential vitamins and minerals. Try to increase your intake of fruit and vegetables and whole grains. If you’re trying to lose weight, aim for sustainable results by adopting a healthy menu and combining nutritional, calorie-controlled meals with regular exercise.

Avoiding smoking

Smoking increases the risk of several life-threatening illnesses, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. If you are a smoker, and you want to quit or cut down, seek advice from your doctor or dentist, write a list of reasons why you want to give up and set yourself manageable targets. Studies suggest that if you can quit for 28 days, you have a much higher chance of giving up permanently. Change your routine or social plans if you tend to smoke at certain times or with specific people and keep track of how long you’ve not smoked for and how much money you’ve saved. Reward yourself and keep setting new targets.

If you have started 2022 with ambitions to make it your healthiest, happiest year yet, why not embrace these lifestyle changes?
