Keeping Active This Winter – Plus Win A Winter Walking Kit!

In collaboration with Fenetic Wellbeing

Fenetic Wellbeing are a mobility company who exist to provide customers with the right healthcare and mobility products for their individual needs. They have recently been promoting their #WalkForWellbeing message of people of every age getting out and being active and  held an event in October where they took bloggers and some of their customers on a walk of RHS Gardens Harlow Carr (with a stop off at Betty’s of course!).

Mobility is a big issue for me. Whilst it doesn’t affect me directly, I have numerous family members and friends who struggle with their mobility in their day to day life. It’s great to see Fenetic Wellbeing helping their customers as they do. Other bloggers such as Sarah and Shona have previously written about their struggles and I wanted to get involved with the campaign to talk about different ways of keeping active this winter, especially after seeing my father struggle just recently on holiday.

For those with mobility problems, it can be difficult to get out and enjoy the winter as let’s face it, weather conditions aren’t always the greatest in the winter. Here are my top tips for keeping active this winter and what I’ll definitely be helping my Dad with:

  • Using walking aids – my Dad uses a walking stick pretty much all the time now when going out but is finding that he is still struggling with those. He used a wheelchair for some of our holiday but I’m starting to think a tri-walker or a rollator may be a better option this winter as he does not like being stuck in the wheelchair and gets quite grumpy – this would give him some independence.
  • Wear appropriate attire – With mobility problems affecting many of my friends and family, it is important to wear the right attire when getting out and about in the winter, especially footwear. My Dad really loves slipper style shoes as they’re much comfier but they aren’t always the best for grip. Finding footwear that is not only comfy but appropriate is key.
  • Keep warm – Its all well and good trying to go out and keep active during the cold winter but its important to keep warm so as not to catch a chill!

These are just some of my tips for keeping active this winter – my Dad often seems to almost ‘hibernate’ during the winter as his lack of mobility means he struggles so much more at this time of year. I am determined to change that this year and get him out and about as much as possible with our help.
