My boy Jack has always been a bit of a bookworm. He loves being read to every night and also loves flicking through the pages making the story up for himself as he goes along. Since he has started to learn to read though, he has become much more independent and even tries to read to me when he sees words that he recognises.
This week he was given his school reading record for the first time. I remember having one of these when I was at school and after sharing a picture of it on Instagram, it seems I’m not alone! He only received his record on Friday with his first book and has had a new book come home every day since – he is really relishing in reading his school books.
Both the teachers and us as parents are meant to spend time with him reading and it is interesting seeing the comments from his teacher about his progress. He seems to be progressing well at school but also seems to be holding back slightly – I’ve noticed him being quite adept with certain words but then the teacher has said that he isn’t – perhaps he is being a bit shy at school when reading? Either way I am leaving it until next week to see how he gets on and whether his confidence at reading with/to a teacher grows before mentioning anything.
I’m so excited for him, seeing him start his reading journey. My love affair with books really started from infants school and I can’t wait to see if Jack grows up loving books as much as I do. It is also amazing to see someone you created learn to read, learn this brand new skill that they will need in life. It seems bizarre that my once little baby can now walk, talk, read and is attending full time school. Just where has the time gone?
Did you have a reading record like this when you were at school or do your children have them now?

Reading is a wonderful journey indeed. My younger one is 6. I bought him a big set of Songbirds Phonics collection from The Book People, I think there are 36 books, and we found it very helpful to move from level to level.
Ekk go Jack – there is something wonderful about reading and knowing how much you love to read – I’m sure Jack will soon be off in his world of books! x
Mother’s joy. :)) I love books and with everything available today it’s nice to see kids who love to read no matter how small they are. I’ve never heard about a reading record before though. 🙂
You hit the nail on the head with childrens reading abilities at school and at home. I worked in a school whilst I was training as a TA and most children could read beautiful at their desks but if you need one on one time for assessments it’s all the counts, you’d have to mark them lower (even if you know they can do it!)
I hope he finds books he can enjoy, reading is such a huge part of learning and it can really create a great push for the rest of his education!
Sending love! x
Awww. Bless Jack. My daughter was the same with her reading but now she LOVES to read and is a proper little bookworm! I really like reading the teachers comments in her reading diary, haha. xx
I love that he makes up his own stories. I work with children and it’s so important to instill the love of reading when they’re little! I hope he finds some books he likes! My god-son loves the cat in the hat & the dinosaur that pooped a planet.
Oh bless – I hope he can find books that he can enjoy! I never liked reading at school but learnt to love it as an adult!
Maybe he is a bit shy or not too confident in his surrounding right now, but it sounds as though he is excelling!
