Ever since Jack started at the nursery he is at now (read all about his first day here), I’ve been wondering when the first parent consultation afternoon/evenings would be coming up. A couple of weeks ago, we were asked to choose a time that worked for us and with Steve taking his holiday right now, I made sure we had an appointment for early afternoon to get it over and done with so we could get on with the rest of our day.
I was a little apprehensive – I had been pulled aside by his teachers once or twice as his behaviour hadn’t been very good – and he has also been quite clumsy since joining, always falling over or something silly. He had recently started talking about some other friends rather than the usual two he always spoke about which I thought was a little strange until we saw them and they said they had moved him into the other group. Both groups interact most of the time but for storytime and things like that, he was in a different group to a couple of his friends.
This totally made sense as to why he was talking about other children, he was spending a lot of time with them and making new friends. One of his friends in the original group was his only classmate at pre school – and both of them found it hard to adjust in a class of thirty children when they were used to just the two of them (it was a new pre school at the time). The teachers believe this accounted for the earlier bad behaviour as he has been really good ever since, always listening to the teachers and being very inquisitive, always asking questions. It must have been quite the adjustment for them two to get their heads round.
The other friend is the son of a family friend anyway so Jack already knew him which is why they are trying to encourage them to branch out with other friends without forgetting their original friends. His little friend from pre school only wants to play with Jack or by herself so this move has been done to benefit them both – getting to make new friends whilst staying friends themselves.
All in all, it was a really positive consultation. Jack seems happy with his teacher, she seems happy with him and is certain that the behaviour was just a blip whilst he got adjusted to this new experience. Apparently he is always keen to learn and is more advanced with his Maths than they would expect him to be at his age. Proud parents alert – Steve was very chuffed when he heard this.
I am so glad Jack is enjoying his experience at nursery now and I’m definitely going to be applying to get him into the infants school for next September. He has really flourished there with the right support and guidance and I look forward to seeing how he gets on in the coming months.
Have you had parent consultations recently? If you aren’t a parent, do you remember yours?

Ah he’s really cute. Glad he had a great one, I know what its like though when you’re worried about what will be said. Our last one for my youngest had me so so worried, but actually was really good x
Almost every step of the way my son was a worry. He is very creative but had speech and language problems which would make him frustrated. He has turned out so well though. I am glad Jack appears to be enjoying nursery, my son didn’t really and I moved him to a less structured playgroup where he thrived. He seems a credit to you Bex 🙂
Ah, so glad to hear he’s doing better.
My girls are still too young for school but I am looking forward to attending a parent/teacher evening. I used to wonder what they would talk about.
Well done jack xx
He looks totally adorable! My little cousin was the same way but little by little they adapted to school very well 😀
Bless him, I’m glad he is enjoying nursery school. I didn’t realise they had parent evenings when they were so little!
Oh bless him – I am so glad he has settled in – you should be proud. Pickle starts afternoons in January eeek! Kaz x
So glad it went well! I always got the same comment at parent teacher consultations.. I’m too quiet in class!
Such a cutie. I am not looking forward to my kids going to nursery and I am looking forward as well. Lol.
Glad it went well! I can’t say I’m surprised that he’s doing well with his learning, whenever I’ve seen you he’s learnt something new even before pre-school! Which reminds me…we need to meet up soon!!!
It’s great that he’s doing well! Every parents evening, my Mum was told that I was very bright but that I never stopped talking, haha. x
It’s great he’s now doing so well, it brilliant when you have a team to help support you through difficult transitional periods. x
These things always make me very nervous – I feel like I’m back at school and I’ve been summoned to the Headmaster’s office! Glad that it went well 🙂
Aw I’m so pleased hes doing well! xxx
Ahh, glad it went well and he is doing much better 🙂 It’s nice when you can find a reason for the bad behaviour isn’t it, as at least then you can do something about it x
Aaaahhh how Wonderful, my kids love school. I always feel a bit nervous having these meetings as you don’t really know what your kids get up to at school. So it’s nice to leave with a smile on your face.
Oh bless him, he is doing really well and it is a huge change but he seems to have adapted well! Go jack x
I’m so pleased to read that he’s started settling in and it was a positive consultation for you. It sounds like there was some big adjustments to make so as you say things were understandable
Aww Jack looks so cute in his little uniform. My nephew has just started pre school, and I know it can be so difficult for them to adjust, it definitely just takes time though! I’m sure he won’t forget his friend from pre school when he makes lots of new ones! Your house will be full of them before you know it 🙂
I am glad he has settled in as sometimes it is really hard to make new friends.
