With some aspects of parenting, it’s never too early to start planning ahead. Preparing for their future is especially important, be it through childhood savings bonds or passing on an heirloom, it’s important to think about what will work with your present finances and your family. Making a tradition throughout your family is a lovely way to ensure your child is aware of their heritage, and any heirloom item or traditional gift will have a story behind it. Even if they are only wee now, it is definitely worth planning ahead to make a heirloom handover extra special.
Choosing A Gift
If you have any special items or recovered treasure from your deceased family members, these items can make a really special and worthwhile gift for your children in the future – for example if a relative dies and leaves them something, or if you have anything handed to you that you do not wear, or simply an item that is significant to you, these can make wonderful gifts when your child hits a milestone in their life.
Alternatively, create a new tradition and have something bought especially for them. A luxury wristwatch is traditionally gifted to sons, but is now a great gender neutral option – and you could even consider engraving it for the event. Fine jewellery is also an option, from the traditional engraved signet ring to a more stylish necklace or earrings. Alternatively, a family member’s wedding or engagement ring can make a really special gift, either for a milestone birthday or to be passed on to a prospective bride joining the family.
When to Present
So now you’ve got your gift, we fast track to some point in the future when it is time to give it. Milestone birthdays are the traditional point at which a family heirloom (old or new) is bequeathed to the child in question. An 18th or 21st birthday, depending on when you think your child is ready, makes a wonderful occasion for these gifts, and signifies your child coming of age and joining the family as an adult.
Alternatively, a particular achievement may be a worthy occasion for a special gift. A first significant industry award or a university graduation is a day on which you and your child will be incredibly proud of their achievement, and so a significant gift is a reward for their hard work and energy.
