We all have them. Those programmes on TV that we can’t quite admit to watching, those CD’s that we may hide if other people come round, those hobbies that others may find a little weird. We all have our own guilty pleasures – but why should we feel so guilty about them?
Me, I love a bit of trash TV or a trashy book. They offer an escape from the outside world and whilst Catfish and Geordie Shore may not be everyone’s cup of tea, they provide me with entertainment so why should I feel guilty about that? I also love watching all types of detective/crime programmes – even ones such as Miss Marple where the detective is elderly and it is set in the thirties and forties. A recent find of mine has been Quiz Nights on Sky 1. Until Jack was born, I was a regular at my quiz night and my team often won – it is so funny seeing four teams across the country go head to head and see them getting such easy questions wrong – we’ve all done it!
I love all types of books – and whilst I didn’t think the Fifty Shades Of Grey series were literary masterpieces, I couldn’t help but feel amused and entertained by them – they were so bad, they were good type of entertainment. I love chick lit as it is just so fluffy – you can dive into a book knowing there will be a happy ending at the end. This is always handy for me after I’ve read one too many crime novels – there are only so many times you can read about yet another brutal murder (although I do like to guess the perpetrator and in recent reads, have been mostly right!)
Can guilty pleasures also count for weird crushes? Alan Davies, Russell Howard – not conventionally attractive but my ‘guilty pleasure’ men. There’s just something about them. I find myself watching the programmes they are on even if I don’t particularly like the programme or the other people participating.
Do you have any guilty pleasures?
