If the rumors are true, all people who want to apply for a Schengen visa can do so through a single online site under the new rules.
They will only have to pay the visa fees and send electronic copies of their travel papers and other documents supporting their application. The visa application went through without any problems.
How the digital Schengen system will work
EU will set up a centralized online system where visa applicants can send and pay for their forms.
The software will quickly determine which Schengen country is responsible for looking into an application.
The paper application process might need to be clarified at the time for people who want to travel to many European countries.
The digital system will automatically inform applicants if they need any information or papers, saving them a lot of time and hassle.
After the visa has been given, it will no longer be given as a real sticker. Instead, it will be available as a digitally signed two-dimensional bar code.
Those applying for the first time will still have to go to a consulate to have their biometric information taken.
Before the idea can move forward, it must be approved by the European Parliament and Council, but it will likely work.
It will be shown to the government committee sometime in the next few months.
Changes to expect
People who want a visa will have their own private, secure account on the site. From this account, they can get regular updates that tell them how their application is going.
The site will guide the applicants through the process and even let them know when their biometrics meetings are if they choose to participate.
If more than one Schengen country is visited, the service will figure out on its own which Schengen country will be in charge of reviewing the visa application. Those who are asking for it will find the process much easier.
The Commission wants to change the platform so that National Visas, which the Member States give long-term visas, can be given in digital form.
That implies that applications for Schengen visas will be one of many things that can be done on the platform. Instead, it will also take visa applications to join and leave Schengen.
Reason Why EU Digitalizing Schengen Visa Procedures Now
The Schengen visa code went into action for the first time in 2010. The Visa Information System (VIS) didn’t start working until the next year, in 2011.
Since then, a lot has changed in the environment where visa policy is implemented. That is because more people are coming into the country without permission, and more threats to national security exist.
Also, big technological changes may have given visa applicants and companies that help people get visas new possibilities.
Even though some parts of the Schengen visa application process have been moved online, even in 2022, many steps still involve paper.

Paying the Schengen Visa Fee Online
The platform will also let you pay for a Schengen visa through a third-party gateway linked to the online application platform.
The money will be sent on time to the Member State where the application is being processed.
The fees for getting a visa will not change, and the exemptions and deals to make getting a visa easier will still be in place.
Which Countries Will Use the Platform?
The platform will be used by all 26 of the countries that make up the Schengen Area. Ireland, a non-Schengen member by choice rather than need, is not required to participate in the platform. It is different for the other five non-Schengen EU nations.
The remaining four, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, and Romania, are currently trying to become a part of the Schengen Zone. They will be required to continue issuing visas in the form of a consistent format, which is a sticker.
When Will the Platform Be Operational?
The Commission plans to begin developing the platform in 2024, which is two years from now. They think that it will be fully functional by 2026.
But the Member States will have five years to switch from the old way of handling visas to the new digital way.
It means that by 2031, all applications for Schengen visas are expected to be filed and handled digitally, no matter where in the Schengen area the applicant wants to go.
